SLC Offensive Player of the Week

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University junior quarterback Darrell Colbert has been named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness (CSM). The CSM weekly superlatives are released in advance of the Southland Conference’s official player of the week honors which are released from the league office on Monday mornings.

Colbert was responsible for the team’s first six touchdowns Saturday as LU defeated Texas-Permian Basin, 72-6, for its first victory of the season, and the first win for new head coach Mike Schultz. Colbert kept the Falcons defense off balance by passing for four touchdowns and rushing for two. He finished the game completing 18-of-23 (.783) passes for 190 yards and also carried the ball eight times for 69 yards and two scores.

The 72-point outburst was the third-highest total in program history, and the most points since 2014.

Colbert was one of five Cardinals to rush for at least 60 yards in the game, as LU finished the night just 58 yards shy of a single-game team rushing record. The record, which barely survived the Cardinals offensive onslaught, has stood since the 1960 season.

In addition to its spread out ground assault, Colbert combined with senior Andrew Allen to connect with 11 different receivers on the night. Five different Cardinals caught a touchdown pass in the home-opening victory.

Colbert is completing nearly 63 percent of his passes on the season for 330 yards and six touchdowns. He is currently second on the squad averaging better than 40 rushing yards per game.

Colbert will look to stay hot as Big Red begins Southland play on the road Saturday at Northwestern State. The game against the Demons (0-2) will kick off at 6 p.m. from Turpin Stadium.
