Cards Sixth in SLC Coaches Poll

LU picked sixth in preseason coaches poll

LAKE CHARLES – Since re-starting the football program five years ago, a heavy Beaumont media contingent has been a regular sight at the annual Southland Conference football media day at L’auberge Resort, and this year it was no different as head coach Ray Woodard and preseason All-Southland honorees Caleb Berry and Reggie Begelton represented Lamar on an event that was carried nationwide on ESPN3.

The day’s festivities began for Lamar with the annual media luncheon, which featured comments from Southland commissioner Tom Burnett as well as an update on the 2015 FCS National Championship Game, which will once again be hosted by the conference in Frisco, Texas.

Prior to the luncheon, the Southland announced that LU was tabbed to finish sixth in the annual preseason coaches poll, marking the best showing in the poll that the Cards have had since the reboot of the program. The Cards were selected seventh by the sports information directors.

“I think it shows the growth of this program that we’ve been picked higher than we have before, but at the same time, I think we can finish better than sixth,” Woodard said. “I can’t put too much stock in preseason polls because Southeastern was picked fifth by the coaches last year. I think we’re better than sixth, but we have to prove it on the field.”

The day closed with sit-down interviews with a number of local television stations before the group hit the road back to Beaumont.

Aside from Cardinal football players and staff, the Big Red Sports Network was also heavily involved in the production as they worked with the league to broadcast each team’s press conference live via the Southland Digital Network. LU assistant athletic director Daucy Crizer also served as the day’s moderator.

Preseason camp for the Cards is slated to begin on August 4.
