Beaumont, Texas-- Dominique Edwards registered her second career double-double and the Lamar Lady Cardinals extracted a little bit of revenge in a 76-53 Southland Conference women’s basketball victory over visiting Central Arkansas on Thursday.
Edwards had game highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Lady Cardinals (19-7 overall, 11-4 Southland) moved into a first-place tie with Sam Houston State, a half-game ahead of Oral Roberts. Lamar also got payback for a 67-62 overtime loss at Central Arkansas earlier this season.
“We played with a lot of intensity. There was a postseason atmosphere tonight,” Lamar coach Larry Tidwell said. “I was very happy with the way we responded.”
Lamar never trailed in the contest. After Central Arkansas tied the game at 10 with 12:26 remaining in the first half, the Lady Cardinals went on a 12-0 run highlighted by 3-pointers from Gia Ayers and Kalis Loyd to take a 22-10 lead with 8:16 remaining in the first half. Central Arkansas pulled to within three late in the half, but Lamar closed out the half on a 6-0 run to take a 32-23 lead into intermission.
Lamar scored the first five points of the second half, and Central Arkansas (14-13, 7-9) never got to within single digits the rest of the way.
The Lady Cardinals did a good job of handling the ball, committing a season-low nine turnovers, while forcing Central Arkansas into 17 turnovers.
“We did a great job tonight in controlling the ball,” Tidwell said. “I wish I could say it was great coaching, but the players deserve the credit.”
Edwards was one of three Lady Cardinals in double figures. Ayers had 15 points and Loyd added 14 points in the win.
Megan Herbert led Central Arkansas with 19 points and 11 rebounds, getting nine of those points in the final five minutes with the Lamar starters on the bench.
Desiree Rogers added 13 points for Central Arkansas, which struggled with its shooting. The Sugar Bears were 18-of-58 (31.0 percent) from the field, including 0-of-11 from 3-point range.
Lamar closes out the home portion of its schedule at 4 p.m. Saturday by hosting Oral Roberts in a key conference game. Saturday is Senior Day and also the Standing Ovation for Jimmy and Simmons as Lamar honors its retiring president and his wife.
Tickets for Saturday’s doubleheader (the men take on Oral Roberts at 6 p.m.) are just $1, and are available at the Montagne Center ticket office, all Rao’s Bakery outlets in Southeast Texas, online at www.LamarCardinals.com, or by calling (409) 880-1715.
Lamar and Sam Houston State have three games remaining on the schedule, Oral Roberts has two games remaining.
“We just have to take care of business,” Tidwell said. “We’ve put ourselves in great position. We have to take advantage of it.
