Berry Receives National Attention

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Lamar senior quarterback Caleb Berry has been named to the 2014 College Football Performance Award Watch List announced CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. Berry is one of 36 quarterbacks nationally named to the preseason watch list.

The Southland Conference enters the 2014 season with arguably the strongest crop of signal callers in the country. Among the 36 candidates, five are from Southland schools.

“We’re very excited for our five quarterbacks that have been named to the 2014 College Football Performance Awards Watch List,” SLC Commissioner Tom Burnett said. “We believe these student-athletes will lead their teams to great success this season.”

A 2013 honorable mention All-SLC selection, Berry is coming off the best single-season performance by a Lamar quarterback in school history. Berry set single-season school records for completions (295), passing yards (3,332), yards of total offense (3,495) and touchdown passes (32).

Berry orchestrated a record-setting offense last season in Beaumont. By seasons end the Cardinals set or tied nearly 50 team and individual records.

Even more impressive than the numbers Berry put up during his junior season were the numbers he didn’t. In the midst of 32 touchdown performance, where he completed better than 62 percent of his passes, Berry was picked off only eight times.

The Needville, Texas, native enters his senior campaign on pace to become the school’s all-time leading passer. Berry comes into the 2014 ranked among the school’s all-time top three in every category, and needs only three more touchdown passes to become the school’s career leader in that category.
