Lady Cards fall to Denver

DENVER, Colo. – Moe Kinard set two school records in Lamar University’s double-overtime loss to the University of Denver. Kinard set single game scoring records with 58 points and hit a school record 13 three’s in the 117-110 loss to Denver.

The Cardinals are now 4-2 on the season, while the Pioneers improved to 4-1.

“Moe was outstanding on both ends of the floor today against Denver,” said head coach Robin Harmony.  “She is a great shooter and is capable of putting up points in bunches.”

Kinard set single-game records in points (58) and three-pointers made (13).  Both marks also are single-game Southland Conference records as well.

Miya Crump followed with 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Chastadie Barrs just missed a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Ashlan Miles chipped in 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds.

“I just went out there with a scoring mentality, which I normally have and I knew we needing the win but we came up just a little short,” remarked Moe Kinard.

“It’s a learning experience for us,” said Harmony.  “We are going to learn from our mental mistakes and make the corrections and continue to move on.”

The Cards and Pioneers came out and traded baskets early as a three-pointer by Lola Bracy tied the game at 10-10. Just over a minute later, Moe Kinard hit her first three of the game, which put the Cards ahead, 15-13. Following Kinard’s three, LU went scoreless for a three-minute stretch. Denver went on a 9-2 run and held a 25-20 lead after the first quarter of play.

Opening the second quarter, the Cards and Pioneers traded baskets and with 7:25 left in the quarter, LU found itself down 27-25. Lamar followed by going on a 9-0 run that was capped by an Ashlan Miles three-pointer putting the Cards ahead, 34-27. The Cards grew the lead to as many as eight, 37-29, after a Crump three. However, the Pioneers battled back took the lead of 41-40. Kinard gave the Cardinals a two-point lead, 43-41, after hitting a three to end the second quarter.

Kinard came out on fire in the second half as she hit back to back threes for the Cards extending LU’s lead to eight, 49-41. Denver did not go away, and the teams traded baskets. With the Cards ahead 57-54, Miles hit a three putting LU ahead, 60-56. However, Denver closed out the quarter on a 11-3 run and held a 67-63 lead over Lamar after three quarters of play.

Kinard kept the Cardinals in the game as she scored 16 points in the fourth quarter. With the Cards down six, Kinard scored the next 11 points for LU putting Lamar ahead 79-76. The lead grew to eight, 84-76, after Kinard hit her 11th three of the game. Her 11th three set a school record and gave her 45 points which also set a school record. However, the Cards offense went cold as they were held scoreless for the final 2:37 of the quarter. Leading by three, 87-84, Grace White banked in a three tying the game and forcing overtime.

In overtime, the Cards jumped out to a quick six-point lead 95-89 capped by a pair of Kinard free throws.  The Pioneers then clamped down on defense and went on a 7-0 run led by four points by Nelson.  Sophomore Rikiah Cowart broke the DU run and gave LU a 97-96 lead with 19 ticks left on the clock.  Romanowski went 1-for-2 at the line to force a second overtime period.

Denver jumped out to a four-point lead and did not look back in the second overtime. Lamar found itself down 113-105 with 36 seconds left in the second overtime period.  Kinard drained one more trey to set the conference and program mark of 13 three-pointers and 58 points. DU closed out the game with a pair of free throws to make the final 117-110.

The Cards return to action on Saturday, Nov. 24 when they play Ohio at the Denver Classic. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. (1 p.m. MT).
