Guest CardAmbassador Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I have a few questions for our resident Band Director. Is the marching band going to travel to any away games this year? Including this one? What should we expect for homecoming? Finally, I want to say that I thought last weekends performance was possibly the best I've seen to date. I really liked the second song, it had alot of power and bravado. The only other performance that might rival this one is the performance at the end of last year, it was the only other time you played to the student section and the directors of the band did a neat little dance. I thought it was cool. Keep up the good work, I'm very impressed with our band, I think it's headed places. Quote
lu cards Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 the band is performing at png tomorrow night as part of the regional uil band competition.the program listed them as a special guest.not a bad way to recruit local kids!! Quote
LUSportsFan Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Great comments. There are many things that I like about the band. Marching Style ... I didn't see the band last year, but have really enjoyed the performances this year. I like both the military style during the pregame and the show band style during half time. I know it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. The efforts are appreciated and the results are outstanding. I really like the fact that the band plays to both sides of the stadium. Although our seats are on the Alumni side of the stadium, I appreciated that the band dedicated its performance to the students and played to the student side during Saturday's half time performance. Sound ... I know the band is still growing and is not yet up to the numbers we had in the 80's, but I've seen bands twice the size of this year's band that couldn't put out half of the sound. I was blown away at the Incarnate Word game. That continued with the NLU game. Spirit and Pep during the game ... The band plays an integral part in helping to build team support and adding to the home field advantage just as the other spirit groups do. The pep music played between downs is appreciated. The drum corps is great. Music Selection ... Love the music selection. The Led Zeppelin selections have been personally meaningful. One of the selections, Kashmir, was my wife's favorite when we first started dating a long, long time ago so both of us really enjoyed hearing it last Saturday. I agree with CA's statement "Keep up the good work." The band performances are some of my favorite things about the football games. Quote
Guest NorthoftheBorder Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 I was told by someone in the band that they get to travel to 1 away game a year. This year it will be Sam Houston. Quote
Guest Mahler Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Thanks everyone for your comments! The students work really hard to learn two different marching styles: Military (pre-game) and Corps (halftime). In regards to the away games... we have to fund our trips to away games with our own budget. We are taking the band to the Sam Houston game on Oct. 29th - hope you all can come out and support the football team with us. We would love to go to all the games but unfortunately our budget restricts our travel. This weekend we will performing at the end of the UIL Region 10 marching contest. We perform tonight at 8:15 PM at the PNG stadium. If you were not able to go to the TXst game hope you can come out and watch some bands today. Homecoming we will be performing part of our new show featuring music of Queen. We will start out with "We Will Rock You" followed by the fun "Bicycle Race." Then some of the Alumni will be joining us on the field to perform with us. Should be lots of fun! The following home football games we will be adding "Bohemian Rhapsody" to the show and it is a GREAT arrangement - should get the crowd really into it! Again thanks for everyone's support. Go CARDS! Let's beat TxSt today!!!! Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 I have another question. Are there competitions in College for marching bands? If so do we intend to eventually send our band to some National competitions? I feel like the HS bands around here are so good that our marching band could really make some noise at the college level of competition if aloud. Quote

There is only one competition for college bands and that is "Battle of the Bands" held in Atlanta, GA. Similar to the movie "Drumline," however, those are historically for black colleges. The, "no competition" atmosphere that collegiate bands have is a huge draw and recruiting tool that many students look forward to from 4 years of UIL competitions in high school. And yes, I would put our product up against any other university. We work really hard on fundamental marching techniques and individual sound/tone quality. We want to look and sound good! Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 TxSt-SM had a big band, can't wait until ours grows to that size. I'm looking forward to the Homecoming performance, I know it's going to be awesome. Quote
