Special Teams Highlight

BEAUMONT - Lamar University enjoyed a triumphant return to the gridiron in 2010, finishing with a 5-6 record playing as a Football Championship Subdivision independent. This year, the pressure will be ratcheted up as a Southland Conference title is on the line.

As is often the case in football, many games come down to the work of the deep snapper, the holder, the punter and the placekicker. LU special teams coach Brian Mayper is pleased to have his entire group back for this season, with most of the key roles being filled by sophomores who will be together for three more seasons.

Only senior wide receiver Marcus Jackson, who serves as the holder, will not be back beyond this season. This continuity allows Lamar to build strong kicking and punting games, areas that can become real positives for the Cardinals.

As long as we start getting consistent kick offs near the Endzone and not on the 15 yard line I'll be happy.

Field position was a huge problem for us last year because almost every single kick off went to about the 15 yard line.
