Kade Harrington: Player of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University junior running back Kade Harrington has been named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week announced league officials Monday morning. It marks the second-straight week Harrington has received the honor.

“Kade had an outstanding night,” said LU head coach Ray Woodard. “He was one of the keys to our victory. On that stage, playing who we were playing, that was probably the best individual performance I’ve seen in my career.”

Harrington was key in the Cardinals’ upset win over third-ranked Sam Houston State Saturday proving himself as a threat on the ground and as a receiver. He finished the game with 24 carries for 230 yards and two touchdowns, while adding two catches for 83 yards and a score.

The Kingwood, Texas native helped the Cardinals storm their way out to a 35-14 first half lead against the defending Southland Conference co-champions, and in the second half helped LU keep drives alive when the Bearkats were trying to fight their way back in the game.

Not only was it a new career high running the ball for Harrington, but it was the second-best single-game mark in school history, and just the fifth 200-yard rushing performance by a Cardinal all-time. Harrington finished the game just 29 yards shy of tying the school record set by former LU All-American Burton Murchison against Rice in 1985.

Although Harrington just missed the school’s single-game rushing record, he establish a new program benchmark in another area. He finished the game with 313 yard of total offense surpassing Sammy Carpenter’s mark of 290 set during the 1952 season.

The two-time reigning conference player of the week currently leads the league averaging better than 110 rushing yards per game. He is also tied for the conference lead with five rushing touchdowns.

The Cardinals have a week off before returning to action. Big Red travels to Hammond, La., Thursday Oct. 1 to take on Southeastern Louisiana. The game is slated to kick off at 6 p.m. from Strawberry Stadium, and will be televised on the American Sports Network. It would be the third consecutive game where the Cardinals have squared off against a nationally ranked foe (No. 4 Baylor).
