Eighth-seeded UIW defeated top-seeded Lamar 6-3 in the first round of the Southland Conference Baseball Tournament at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in Hammond, La.

Incarnate Word scored all of their runs in the eighth and ninth innings to overcome what was a 2-0 lead by the Cardinals through four innings.

Lamar trailed 3-2 headed into the bottom eighth inning but tied it up thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ethan Ruiz which scored Austin Roccaforte.

Cameron Caley's three-run homer in the ninth gave UIW a 6-3 lead, one that they would not relinquish.

Lamar falls to the loser's bracket and will face an elimination game against Northwestern State at 9:00 am on Wednesday.

    • Finding a quality replacement will be critical for the Cards.  Maintaining the quality of the pitching staff is very important.
    • They are at the top. If you win the Commissioner's Cup, you're at the top.  I think O'Malley's leadership is different. He has bigger plans but isn't going to go for hollow moves like the WAC departure where there were grand pronouncements to create an 11th FBS conference, but not actual plans. I trust his plans and that he's not going to vastly expand the budget w/o it being able to pay off.
    • Lamar left the SLC twice trying to move above the "dead weight" only to see them flop and move back to the SLC.  Long time Lamar fans have been disappointed by the Lamar athletic department for decades so I don't blame them for not showing up for events.  Schools like Nicholls and McNeese seem to be consistently better with smaller budgets than Lamar.  McNeese has taken the lead in rebuilding the conference.  We'll see if Lamar can actually get to the top and consistently stay there.
