This from the La Tech fan board. They have a sense of humor and are pretty respectfull!!

Here are the top ten things you didn't know about Lamar University:

10. Lamar University was founded as South Park Junior College in 1923.

9. The Catholic Church sued Lamar University for defamation in 2008 over the use of the university's Cardinal nickname.

8. Bob McDill (Lamar '66) wrote 31 #1 country music hits, including "Gone Country", "Louisiana Saturday Night", "Song of the South", and "She Only Loves Me When She's Drunk".

7. Lamar University's men's basketball team enjoyed an 80-game home winning streak from 1978 to 1984. The streak was snapped when Karl Malone led the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to victory in the 1984 Southland Conference Tournament championship game.

6. Contrary to popular belief, Lamar University is actually named after Mirabeau Lamar (former President of the Republic of Texas) instead of Hedley Lamarr from Blazing Saddles.

5. A heckler made fun of Lamar Baseball Coach Jim Gilligan by saying Gilligan should return to the island. Coach Gilligan proceeded to rip off the heckler's head and fashion a radio out of his skull.

4. Ray Woodard came to Lamar to resurrect the school's football program that was dead for about 20 years. When asked who could resurrect Tulane's dead football program, Coach Woodard replied, "Not even God could perform that miracle."

3. In 2012, Lamar's Men's Basketball Coach Pat Knight said, "We've got the worst group of seniors right now that I've ever been associated with." That group of seniors would win three games in the Southland Conference Tournament and earn a bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament. In 2013, Lamar won three games...total.

2. Lamar's Endzone Angels were created to promote school spirit and assist the football team's morale by encouraging the football players to split the uprights, run it hard up the middle, and make every inch count.

And, the #1 things you didn't know about Lamar University...

1. Former Houston Oilers Head Coach Bum Phillips (Lamar Alum) hoped to live enough to see the Houston team be better than the Dallas Cowboys. He got his wish when his son Wade Phillips run the Cowboys into the ground in 2010. rom the LaTech fan board!! They have a sense of humor and are pretty respectful!
