puddin tane Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 couple things... "I wish LU wouldnt play top 10 teams?",...wellllllllll...how you gonna manage to do a schedule that would include FBS teams?...cancel the game if they are ranked...oopps sorry...we thought you'd suck? only try to schedule Rice? hell, i think its pretty damn cool we played OSU We scored as many points as Miss St. c'mon..lets do apples to apples..that was a close game, OSU didnt play their walk ons against Miss St.......UTSA (started program in 2011) scored 28 on their 3rd stringers and walk-ons ..35 points overall "woodard ran the clock out..so what"? whats the old saying..Winners never quit, quitters never win why not try to score at the end? give me one damn reason..whats the worst that coulda happen..OSU intercepts and scores again..big whoop..at least you tried I expected a big ass blow out... I didnt expect Woodard to quit.....again Quote

Lamar scoring on a big play or OSU having a pick 6. You know what's funny is I remember reading on this board and guys were complaining the only thing Lamar threw was a deep route!! Bevil and Hayes didn't play that long ago. Finally you can have your own opinion if the coaching staff packed it in but the players never did. Quote
Lamarcard81 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Glad we got out of the game with no big injuries. Never should have scheduled the game. With better alumni support we would not have to play those games. Hope the atm game gets canceled. johnny mangina will probably be in jail by then in a cell next to von miller and michael goodson. john sharp will still be saying he is a good kid. Quote

That is the attitude of a quitter/loser. Let's not try because somebody might get hurt? Really? This is frigging football not badminton!!! But, even with your pull the starters theory...what did our backups gain out of being in there?? Great experience for Moss...we are comfortable that he can handoff the ball!! You are right about people complaining about throwing the ball deep every damn down! I heard an announcer the other night talking about how a certain dominate college football offense makes your defend the whole field. With us...nope. Pre-Kueck, (actually with Bevil) it was throw the bomb every down. Now, it is throw it in the flat every damn down. Do you have any clue about football? Should we be throwing bombs every down into 2 deep coverage? Hell no! Should we be throwing into the flats every down against press coverage??? OSU's safeties/corners had zero respect for us after the second 'drive'. The first series it caught them off guard...great. So, when they figured out how to defend it did we bother changing??? HELL NO!!! WE KEPT RUNNING THE SAME DUMB SHIT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER!!!!!!!!!!! Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser. This was a great opportunity for us and our coaches are gutless. P.S. - one of Lamar's current problems is we are accustomed to being losers. So everyone accepts it as ok. News flash, we used to have some pride. We used to have a 80 game home court winning streak in basketball. We used to play in a football conference with: La Tech, Louisiana Monroe, and Arkansas State and we'd even occasionally beat those schools. We'd also regularly play schools like UH, Baylor, and Southern Miss...and even beat Baylor and at worst, would be competitive with those schools. Now...oh well, we are new...we are loser university...its ok to quit. Quote

That really is what we were doing...taking a knee. Just cut out the handoff...Moss could have tripped and got hurt. Or the poor widdle running back could have twisted his ankle. PATHETIC...EMBARRASSING...QUITTERS!!! I like it. I think our new 'no huddle game plan' should be...stand there looking at the sideline like a bunch of idiots waiting on the play; let the play clock run down to 4 seconds, rush up to the line, snap it and take a knee. We should do that on every down to keep the score close. We should even do it on 4th down so nobody on special teams will get hurt. Quote
Lamarcard81 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Harrington should not have been in the game in the fourth quarter...it was a lost cause. At this stage in our REDEVELOPMENT competing in and winning conference is my goal. As bad as I hate to admit it...SHSU over the past couple years is one of the best FCS football programs in history and they get spanked by top 20 FBS schools. In 2013 those top 20 FBS schools are in a different league and most if not all FCS schools (and a bunch of FBS schools for that matter) have no business playing them and most NAIA schools have no business playing FCS schools. Thats the reality I see in 2013. I hope the day comes when we can compete with Okie State but right now I want to beat Sam and McNiece and SFA and we will need all our starters healthy to do it. Go Big Red Quote

Card Nation Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I misspoke when i said 'important'. They are all important. I should have said a 'key' player could get hurt. Your point is taken Puddin. After the first drive in the second half when we knew they weren't backing off we could have taken berry and other key starters out. I think Ok State was pissed at giving up so many points to UTSA. Personally, i think Pride should come way behind making the best decision for the team in the long run. The goal is to Win the southland conference.... And that is where our big picture focus should be. playing Oklahoma state gets us not one step closer to our goal. IMO. KABrother88 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 For the people complaining about us even playing OSU you have to realize that most FCS programs stay financially afloat by playing these games...so unless you want to donate $400,000 to the athletic program so we an avoid playing these games this is what your going to have to get used to...A&M is scheduled for next season and I believe we have and agreement with Baylor for 2015. As for the play calling...the last few years has seen Lamar struggle to establish a good ground game. We will not be a successful program until we can do that. So to me I'm just fine with running the ball to end the game. I see it as more of getting in work against a better to equal front of what we will see in conference than just laying down. Going out and throwing 3 incompletions cause our receivers can't get open then punting is not doing any service to our offense. Quote

Going out and throwing 3 incompletions cause our receivers can't get open then punting is not doing any service to our offense. Excellent point. Here's an article about the Idaho Vandals and their contracts with four SEC teams. Idaho is FBS, but they have revenue challenges similar to an FCS team. I'm all for us moving to FBS. The contracts noted in the article are the sort of thing we would probably need to augment our receipts. I selected Idaho because they are FBS, but their attendance and facility capacity is similar to ours. The difference in FCS vs FBS payoff for us would have been $375,000 as an FCS team vs $900,000 as an FBS team. http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/2012/idaho-sec-games/ I don't have a problem with scheduling FBS BCS AQ teams. Except for McNeese, it looks like every team in our conference does it as well as a lot of other FCS teams. I think it is a good experience for the team. I saw injury timeouts for both teams, so I guess one could make the case that FBS teams shouldn't schedule FCS teams because the FBS players might get hurt. I think it is more the nature of the game than the level of competition. The point about play calling is one that I considered. I thought it was a good thing that we could get some sustained drives. On the other hand, I wish we had mixed it up just a little toward the end of the game. On the positive side, since OSU knew we were going to run at the end, our line was blocking in the worst situational conditions. OSU didn't have to respect the pass then. Quote
Lamarcard81 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 here we go again. we have no business scheduling either historically top 25 FBS or any NAIA teams because they don't give us a good picture of our conference competition, and because OF THE NATURE OF THE GAME injuries will occur and why get injured in a game that does nothing to help you prepare for conference? Everyone understands we play Okie State for money. I wish we had better financial support from our alumni so we dont have to go play a game everyone knows and everyone predicts we are going to lose. That Okie State blowout loss will hurt attendance at home for the rest of the year like any other blow out loss. A guaranteed win is important to Okie State....thats why they pay so much to us to come in for a beating. They are willing to risk injury to there starters for the first half to get that guaranteed win. I hope our guys are not demoralized. I wish we could move up to FBS also. I also wish I could win the lottery so I could donate $500K and get us out of that ridiculous game with atm next year. Quote
LU1991 Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Let's be honest...this game was about the money. I'm ok with what we did. I wished we could have scored more but it is what it is. I'm not 2nd guessing the coaches about this one. I'm feeling pretty good about conference play and can't wait to get my red on this Saturday! Quote
LAZEEK Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I was able to get clarification on the travel. 108 players/coaches did take a bus to Oklahoma State, and then flew home on Saturday night late after the game on a charter flight. One way flight cost what I thought it would cost for round trip airfare. Quote

dirtybird Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Wait a second here, look at it this way. Okie State played us in front of a packed house. Don't you think their fans knew it would be a blowout. So playing a smaller school should not be a reason not to go to the game. Why is it ok for Okie State to play a smaller school for a win, and not Lamar. Quote
puddin tane Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 it is what it is.... I'll be there Quote
Lamarcard81 Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 I will be at the game also rain or shine. We were embarrased at Okie State and that will hurt attendance Saturday. Playing a no name opponent is not helpful either. Being on the wrong end of a blow out hurts attendance at the next game no matter who you are...it does not matter who you played. IMO. Quote
Card Nation Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 That is great. Im gonna be there too. So, if we play a top 20 team and get killed its bad and if we play a no name team its bad? I realize the answer is not really clear though and there are a bunch of ways at lookin at this stuff.... Since we 'have' to get a payday and most likely get spanked why not do it on the biggest stage possible? Playing ok state on tv..... Doesnt get much bigger than that. Next year playing A&m and Manziel , pretty exciting stuff to me. So, Its gonna be most likely the same butt whippin just more money and more name recognition for Lamar in long run. With regard to us playing cup cakes... I dont think playing an additional non conference difficult game to be a good decision. Our schedule appears very similar to other fcs teams in our conference. I dont have any complaints on this year or next years schedule. People are gonna come if we are competitive in conference, IMO. We need to be in the hunt for conference title and/or playoff birth for large increases in attendance. I think Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 Quote
puddin tane Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 i think the new has "worn" off...i think we get 8-10k/game with good weather...unless we are playing for conference title some time...gotta move mcneese outta deer season... Quote
Card Nation Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Another idea for bringing more fans to the game would be to 'hype'. the stars up.... Make fans want to see the player or players perform... Kind of like they do for Astro baseball players by putting full body pictures of the current baseball players on the large billboard off the freeway in downtown houston, etc. im not saying do that but you get my point... Sell our team or players as being special.... Its marketing... Make someone think they are missing something if they dont come... And if they come and we lay an egg... Keep selling... Just a thought ... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 Quote
