BSFwins
Is there a couple of people who are in the know who saying Jeremy Johnson would start at QB for Lamar after transferring from West Virginia? Does anyone remember all the fuss of fans saying who should start? I believe the names Prewitt, Johnson and Bevil were the most mentioned. Am I alone here because someone acts like I thought Lamar recruited JJ in HS?!?? That is hilarious...Come on man!!
LUSportsFan
The way you describe it is the way I remember the situation. I checked ESPN and Rivals recruiting sites. Neither list Lamar. Just generally speaking, I think we should always at least put a line in the water for athletes in our area. Can't hurt to ask and it shows an interest in the local talent. Meaning if two players are about the same I prefer a local kid. But, I want the best football players available where ever the are currently. The only reason I see going after local guys first is because of how much it costs to recruit guys out of the area (visits, flights, meals, etc.). Otherwise, if there are two guys who compete rather well with one another as far as talent goes, I'll take the out-of-towner any day. It gets the LU brand out there. I like seeing a large amount of CA guys on our team. It does nothing but good things for the program's recognition in that state. I may be the only one. When Lamar was great in basketball were the guys local besides B.B. Davis or out of the area?
LUSportsFan
Kenneth Perkins (Beaumont), dad of NBA player Kendrick Perkins, wasn't too bad of a player. Norman Bellard (Beaumont) wasn't too bad. James Gulley (Newton) wasn't too bad. Phil Endicott (Beaumont) wasn't too bad. Those are just a few off the top of the head. Don Bryson, an all-American player for Lamar, came from the Houston area. I'm not saying to only go after local talent...far from it. I'm just saying don't forget about the local players and don't fail to recruit a player just because there is a good possibility that we may miss out; particularly if the player is in your backyard. BSFwins
Mike Olliver, Clarance Kea, Alvin Brooks, Matt Sundblad (1st Team Academic All American)
LUSportsFan
If we're listing out of area players, don't forget Earl Dow. He was one of the most electrifying players I've ever seen. Before Tubbs and Foster, but that team beat "weak" programs like Memphis State, Tulsa, etc. and was ranked inone of the Major college polls. Saw them beat the SWC champs on their home court also. Not sure what the point is anymore. Are we saying blow off the local area? I hope not. Sent from my Android device using Tapatalk
BSFwins
Oh he was great but check the All-Time records and who is in the Top 10 on each list and out of the area players have made a huge impact on the LU record books! http://issuu.com/lamarcards/docs/men_s_basketball_2012-2013
BSFwins
Refer to my earlier post! I want locals to help fill the stands but nothing does that like winning! You remember waiting for hours for tickets to a Lamar game? I DO!!
LUSportsFan
I had season tickets...just walked in. :) Loved being part of SRO crowds at McDonald Gym and then the Civic Center. Great crowds at the Montagne Center also. Got to see every game of the Streak plus a whole lot more home games as well as a bunch of away games. Bringing back a lot of good memories. As far as recruiting players, I think we're saying the same thing just in a different way. In the end, I think we all want to get the best players who fit with the program to come here and be successful. But, I give my dad credit for willing to stand in line for hours for the games he would bring me to see. Those were great memories. I wasn't there for all 80 of the streak but I was there when Top 10 Karl Malone and La Tech ended it. I was so upset because Lamar should have won that game. I loved it and maybe one day those times will return. Wish LU would hurry and renovate Vincent Beck. I will be a awesome facility and recruiting tool. Definitely would be the best in the SLC!
