2014 Lamar Cardinals

I know there is still one game left this season but just took a look at the 2 deep to see how we are going to look next season.

Offensively I think next year has the potential (hate that word) to be a special one. only 5 seniors on the current 2-deep and 2 of those are back-ups. Starters that will be gone are WR Jordan Edwards, RT Stephen Babin, and the one that will be felt the most C Kyle Gillam.

Note: Eligibility in () reflects 2014 season

It will be intersting to see how the coaching staff works the O-Line. Justin Brock (JR) in practically locked into the LT spot for his Junior season. This year LG has seen Ian Kelso (SR) and John Craven (SO), although Chance McCormack (SR) is listed as 2nd string LG and Craven at 2nd string Center. Kelso has played some Center in the past so I wonder if he will slide over next season and let Craven handle LG. RG all season has been Bret Treadway (SO) and would probably be there next season. RT has mountain on a man Chris Mayer (SR) currently as the back up and probably in line for the starters roll his senior season. Of course these depend on transfers this off season and also the status of Brock Wempa who should get a medical redshirt for this season and be back in 2014. Other Wild Cards could be Hunter Conn (SO/FR), Kevin Grief (SO/FR) and Tramon Shead (JR/SR)...not sure if these guys have participated this season or not so I listed classification with and without a redshirt applied. I could see quite a few senarios there.

Skill player wise it looks pretty cut and dry. WR should be Mark Roberts (SR), Reggie Begelton (JR), and Mike Handy (SO) with a mixture of Gratian Gladney (JR) and Jacye Nelson (JR)...if Coach K is out then Kevin Johnson (SR) might be back in the mix. TE should be Payton McVey (SR) and Dillon Barrett (JR). Kade Harrington (SO) has the RB position locked down will be the only one returning man so I'd hope there would be a transfer RB whether its JUCO or FBS to be able to come in and take some carries and keep Harrington fresh. QB will be Berry (SR) barring an injury or something crazy.

Defensively is where it may make you cringe. 11 of the 22 on the 2 deep will be gone.

Up front Koby Couron (SO) is in line to take the place of Jesse Dickson at one DE spot with Keith Curran (SR) manning the other in the place of Mark Murrill, Omar Tebo (SO) and Joe Okafor (SR) will be back at NT although i wouldnt be surprised if Okafor slide out to end if we get another NT ready to play as I believe that is what he was at OSU when he transfered. Wild Cards here are probably David Hollyfield (JR) and Corbin Carr (SO).

Linebacking corps will lose a lot of leadership in Jermaine Longino, James Washington, Will Jones, and Anthony Beard. Returners look to be Logan Moss (JR), Jestin White (SR), Mike Hargis (JR), and Ronnie Jones (JR). Wild Card to me here is Romando Stewart on the weak side.

If the Linebackers look bad you may want to stop here. The Secondary will have a lot of new names and faces come next season. Departing are CBs Branden Thomas, and Tyrus McGlothen. Lloyd Julian (SO) and Montez Hunter (SR) are thier current backups. At Safety, Nashon Davids, Chad Allen, and Courtlin Thompson will be gone leaving only Colby Campbell (SO) left. If Kevin Johnson (SR) is moved here primarily it will alleviate so of the damage but it will definately be a secondary lacking experience. Wild Card here is Xavier Bethany (SO). Look for a transfer to help in the secondary.

Special Teams should be a strong point next season. So far, Alex Ball (SO) has become the Kicker we all had hoped when he signed and Juan Carrano (SO) should step into the as the Punter position in the place of Kollin Kahler. Wished they would have Red-Shirted Carranco to get 4 years out of him and it seems they wasted that opportunity by playing him sparingly. He was a outstanding kicker in HS but was also a real weapon punting and that will be on display next year. Kevin Johnson (SR) and Mike Handy (SO) should handle the return duties. The one player that it remains to be seem if it will have an impact losing is Deep Snaper Chris Maikranz. He has been a good one and will be replace most likely by Lawson Hartwick (SR).

Overall we should be able to score with anyone in the SLC if the play calling becomes consistent...but stopping them may be an major issue. My gut tells me by the time conference rolls around the Defense will be shored up and be able to make enough stops to give this team a chance. Without a 2014 schedule being released I can't make a good prediction on how i feel this team can finish but of the 5 confirmed games i could see us going 4-1 in those with wins of Grambling, Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist and Central Arkansas with a loss to Texas A&M...if all goes the way i hope...

Anyone kmow the status of ashton dorsey? He could backup tebo and allow okafor to play defensive end.

I've looked for things saying if he will red-shirt and play next season but can't find anything...did find NFL draft scouting reports and they show him as playing for Lamar but I guess they just wen off of unofficial reports of him transferring
