Does anyone have info on Daniel Campbell status?

From what I have heard he will enroll at Lamar in the summer II session. I was going to use my contacts to check his enrollment status when that time comes. Summer II starts in early July.

I haven't heard anything about him spending a lot of time in Houston area living rooms. Houston is one of the top-5 hotbeds of talent nationally (with the Metroplex, Miami, LA, and Atlanta being the others) and I keep hearing a LOT of JuCo and Golden Triangle guys.

Hopefully, it's just that the Houston area guys he's talking to are mulling other offers and will fall into our column this summer. So much of recruiting is done from November-May these days that I'm starting to worry.

I know that, up in the Spring area, there's an insane amount of talent- even after you just write off the guys on the Rivals100 and ESPN150- since we know that Lamar isn't in a position to steal guys from UT, Alabama, LSU, and the other national schools.

@TexGator: I guess you are referring to Woodard and his staff?

If you look on the 2012 thread there are several kids from the Houston area on there.

What position players do you think we missed out on this recruiting class?

One of the obvious ones to me is RB but there are several others.

I was hoping we would pull Ford in for RB but it didn't happen and then a rumor of a Big XII guy transferring which also didn't happen.

Michael Venson did have a good spring training which should help at the RB position.

I would like to add that I have a friend from Nederland who is trying to walk-on, his name is Tommy Gillespie, if you're familiar with Nederland football you might remember him. He is enrolled in a speed camp and is on the same diet as the players.

Never know, one or two of these kids might be good enough to make an impact this year. How many kids can we have on our roster?

Former Lamar Football Player Sammy Carpenter Passed Away Monday

BEAUMONT - Sammy Carpenter, who was an all-conference tailback on the Lamar football team in the early 1950s, passed away at his home in Orange on Monday.

A four-year letterwinner from 1951-54, Carpenter helped Lamar in its transition from a junior college to a four-year university. He was a four-year starter at tailback in the Cardinals first four years as a university.

Carpenter, who was included in the inaugural Cardinal Hall of Honor induction class in 1973, led the team in rushing all four years, including rushing for 1,005 yards in 1952. Burton Murchison is the only other Cardinal to rush for 1,000 yards in a season with 1,547 in 1985.

A two-time all-Lone Star Conference recipient in 1951 and 1952, Carpenter ranks second on the Lamar's all-time rushing list with 2,703 yards, trailing only Murchison's 3,598. He also ranks second with 4,000 all-purpose offense.

Carpenter is the school's all-time leading scorer with 33 touchdowns and 198 career points. He rushed for 210 yards against Sul Ross State in 1952, which ranks as the third best single-game total in school history. His 84-yard scamper against Texas State in 1952 ranks as the second-longest play from scrimmage in school history.

Heralded as the greatest offensive back in the first 50 years of Lamar football, Carpenter also lettered in baseball and track for the Cardinals.

This was Colby Carpenter's great uncle?

Very sad, I hope his family is doing well.

Cardinal Nation will miss a great player.

On this list of Preffered walk-ons I like Rashad Stewart, his 40 time is good, he looked capable in his video, he already played at the college level. I'm not sure why he is transferring, that back story would be nice to know.

Tony Brodman and Jahmai Colemen also seem like they may be able to contribute, I would like to know more about OL Adam Martin, specifically his size and if he ever played on the defensive side of the ball either. I also want to know why Logan Moss is listed as a TE, he looks great playing defensive end, they should leave him at that position. Don't know how much playing time he would get but he would be a good back up.

At least we can be happy that there are some good walk-ons on this list. Plus guys that we may not know about who are also trying out.

Moment of truth approaching for this recruiting class. I believe several of the players are scheduled to start summer classes for summer session II, which begins Friday.

I'll be checking on the enrollment of O linemen Campbell next week.

I just wanted to notify the people who may not read the Kampus Korner section. TE Logan Moss who is a preferred walk-on in this recruiting class has earned a Mirabeau Scholarship to Lamar. The Mirabeau Scholarship is Lamar's premier academic scholarship and for Moss to receive such a distinction says alot about the young man not only as a student but also as a person. Glad to have him on the team.

With the debate that has been going on over Doty, I thought I'd add my .02 and this seemed like a better topic to post it under than the one that has hosted the debate. I watched Doty play for 2 years while he was in high school. He has a strong arm and throws a great ball. His passes are mostly on target regardless of whether it is a short or long ball he is throwing. He makes great decisions. He is not a mobile QB. I know that some have mentioned that Tatum is not quite what LU thought they were getting when they recruited him. However, Tatum came from a completely different coaching regime than Doty came from. PN-G's new HC has a history of developing top quality QBs. He broke passing records at Permian three straight years with a new QB each of those three years. For a high school player, I'd put Doty at the top of local QBs last year.

Do I blame LU for not recruiting Doty? Absolutely NOT. As others have stated, no one else recruited him either. PN-G players are historically not sought after with very few exceptions. One of those exceptions went to the state championship. Many of you also remember the name Bruce Reyes from West Brook last year. I watched Reyes play QB when he was in middle school, and he looked like a little Vince Young. He had the poise of a varsity QB his 8th grade year. LU didn't recruit him either. Woodward and company know what type of QB they need to fill their offensive schemes. I suspect they are wanting scrambling QBs. Talk of racism at the QB or any other position is bogus. The coaches will fill the positions with players they feel are the best fit for the system and give them the best shot at winning. I don't always agree with their decisions for who will start, feeling that there is some misplaced loyalty to a player taking place. That is another topic that doesn't belong here.

I've read that Doty is now 3rd string at Oregon and that he may find himself 2nd string before too long if they move some positions around. That's great. I think Oregon got a heck of deal since Doty isn't on scholarship. I wish him the best and I'll become a brief Oregon fan if he ever gets to start, as I was a brief A&M fan when Long was starting for them.
