Guest bigred360 Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Aren't they taking Seattle? That is a western school in the WAC. I'm just happy with the information shared last night. Hopefully, Lamar will get in. Just a question here. Why is everyone against rejoining the Sun Belt? There is where most of our old rivalries are and the travel cost would be a lot less expensive.

I'm not against it, but we don't have a good shot of that happening. We aren't even first in line when FCS move ups are mentioned. Also, the SBC has said it wants current FBS teams (I think they're being a little too hopeful there)
Bearkat25 Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 This was posted on the WAC board and I think it's how the WAC will look in 2014: WEST Seattle San Jose St Cal Poly Montana Montana St Idaho Utah St SOUTHWEST Denver New Mexico St UTSA Texas St. Sam Houston St Lamar La Tech Eventually they'll split apart into two FBS conferences. I agree that this is inevitable. After sitting back and looking at the pros and cons of going FBS I really don’t know if I want SHSU to go FBS as bad as I used too. My only reason for moving up was to get out of the SLC (which I never liked).

It will be less and less relevant as the years go by. JMHO!
coachacola Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 The commissioner of the Sun Belt has said they are only looking at FBS schools for expansion. That could all change if they get raided, but for now the only path to FBS is the WAC. Since the Sun Belt stretches from Texas to Florida, they could opt for a more eastern school over Lamar.
Guest CardAmbassador Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 It kind of sucks being on the edge of both FBS conferences we have a chance at. If we were in Utah we would have already been invited. If we were in Alabama, Missisippi its probably the same story.
Guest bigred360 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Coach, thanks for clearing that issue (Sun Belt invite) with me. I didn't know their commish stated they were only looking at FBS schools.
lu cards Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 i know it will never happen but i love to see lamar in a regional fbs conference. texas div lamar sfa utsa tx state rice unt louisiana div ul-l mcneese la tech ul-m tulane south alabama could drive to any sports event.very cost effective for schools.make to much sense to ever happen.

I love this, but it'll never happen like you said. I think I might set this up on NCAA though!
jdcurran235 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I wonder if LU does get an invite this year but we don't get to upgrade til 2013 to give the western schools time to transition. With realignment we could get invited somewhere else and the the WAC looses their shot at us.
coachacola Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 LU may have to wait until next year when UTSA, Texas State and Denver get to vote. The WAC needs east/west divisions so I'm not sure why it matters to the eastern schools if LU gets invited now or next year.
Guest CardAmbassador Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 http://blog.beaumontenterprise.com/inthecards/ LU NOT in 2012 plans. This article pretty much says exactly the same things we already knew. But now Benson is also coming out and saying a 2012 invite is not happening. Simmons was right. The last paragraph is interesting however: “Things like that, nothing official,” Simmons said. “Billy has not been instructed by me to make an official request. A bunch of those reports are pretty erroneous. If an invitation were forthcoming, Lamar University would give it serious consideration. Ultimately, it would be in our best interest to do so.”
Guest CardAmbassador Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 How funny is all this, Benson is quoted yesterday as saying 8 is a minimum but then rules out the only football school he has a chance at for 2012. I'm getting alot of entertainment out of the back peddling being done on all sides of this issue.
TexGator Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 i know it will never happen but i love to see lamar in a regional fbs conference. texas div lamar sfa utsa tx state rice unt louisiana div ul-l mcneese la tech ul-m tulane south alabama could drive to any sports event.very cost effective for schools.make to much sense to ever happen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I would not want this conference alignment. It's as regional of a conference as it gets. Other than saving travel money, what's in it for schools like Rice and Tulane that are already working off a much bigger conference payout allotment than this conference would provide. That's the reason the SWC, with two HUGE anchor schools in UT and TAMU, couldn't survive in an environment where the revenue battles were half of what they are now. If the WAC builds up (like it did in 1996) and then falls apart 3-5 years later because 16 is just too many schools, then Lamar's in a better situation than if they create a 3rd-tier conference. As of right now, there's a definite hierarchy of conferences, and this uber-regional conference would be below the BCS conferences, the MWC, the WAC, CUSA, and even the Sun Belt. We don't need a conference that has to battle out with the Sun Belt for #10.
jdcurran235 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 I think we are still in the picture this year. Things keep changing to fast to believe anything. I do think it is more likely we get extended the invite next year.
Guest NorthoftheBorder Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 As the World Turns!!!! This is definately a soap opera right now. I think that there is also a definate desire by all parties to keep all the talks and information exchange between the WAC and potential member schools out of the media/internet chatter.
jdcurran235 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 We are getting blocked by the west. It is that simple
Guest CardAmbassador Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 As the World Turns!!!! This is definately a soap opera right now. I think that there is also a definate desire by all parties to keep all the talks and information exchange between the WAC and potential member schools out of the media/internet chatter. I'm pretty sure your right. I think our source is about to dry up. :( Reading this story carefully it doesn't contradict anything we have been saying. Simmons didn't think it would happen and now Benson is confirming this.
Guest CardAmbassador Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 It's funny how people will read the same thing and draw vastly different conclusions. Many are heralding Lamar's now stuck in the SLC, funny I didn't get that impression at all. Benson said: Lamar is not a target of 2012 expansion. Simmons says: We are not in talks with the WAC. But then he says Tubbs has spoke to Benson and that Lamar would consider any offer that was put on the table. How do people conclude this is the end? For 2012, yes it is the end. For a invite next year? We're still in the race.
coachacola Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 I agree with you CA. I actually think that Dr. Simmons would prefer Lamar get invited next year, but because they had a good shot this year they went for it. If the invite doesn't come now, they'll have all year to get more funding in place. With Pat Knight as the new BB coach, Tidwell concentrating on WBB, and Woodard competing for the SLC football title, Lamar has a chance to strengthen their case for joining the WAC.
Guest bigred360 Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Thanks for the info as it is what we've been hearing all day!
Guest CardAmbassador Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 LU not in the WAC for 2012, per my source today!!!! Yeah that's what we were hearing too.
