BRI Staff Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 We keep a close eye on things here and these two players are definitely new additions to the active roster since last week. And were not listed on the preferred walk-on list. Player Profiles: Stephone Mercer http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Stephone-Mercer-97159 P.J. Henderson Quote
coachacola Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 P.J. Henderson was a Rivals 2-star player out of high school. At 6-3 and 220 he may actually get some playing time at TE. He last played for Jackson State but that's all I can find on this guy. Quote
peckemtech11 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Thought I should share this..it isnt official yet but ive talked with this individual yesterday who was a starting linebacker at West Brook HS under Coach Stump back in 2008 up until 2010, and lemme tell you.. he's a 6-foot 1 "beast" at Weak side LB. A perfect 10 candidate to replace Asim Hicks next year. Ladies and Gentlemen, Adorian Underwood. A California native whom locals still can't understand why this kid didn't go play College fb. Most likely acedemic issues because this boy is real good. Underwood, for the most part, told me if he'd known for sure when tryouts were scheduled here recently, he'd been the first to sign up. He says he's still working behind the scenes with current players to try and get his name in the Coaches offices to set-up arrangements for next season. I haven't found a profile yet but no need to worry, if Woodard lands this boy, our defense would be explosive, guarenteed for at least another 3 years. Quote

I couldn't find much on Mercer but he was good enough to make the active roster over some of the preferred walk-ons we have. Quote

peckemtech11 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 thanks, IMO he was clearly overlooked by recruiters. hopefully we can pick em up. I assure you he wont be a dissappointment. He's fast, aggressive, mobile and has a good attitude on and off the field. For the Most part, I think since he's a local prospect he can help draw more attn from the community. Quote
Guest NorthoftheBorder Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Too many TE's on the roster. We have 7 now. Still think Forney should be converted to DL. Maybe 1 or 2 others should also move positions. Quote

I agree we have too many TE's I think that the coaches are going to have to move at least 1 of these guys if not two LB or DE would be the most logical choice. Throw each of them 100 balls and who ever catches the fewest gets moved. :) We can get away with 5 TE's because Woodard has said we are going to be running some two TE's formations this year. peckemtech11 wrote: thanks, IMO he was clearly overlooked by recruiters. hopefully we can pick em up. That would be his first move. I feel very good about some of our LB's ability to hold us down at the LB in the coming years. Beard's still got 4 years left, etc. But if he's good enough and can get eligible bring him along. I would only say that I believe some of the locals think that far more of their schools athletes are DI prospects than really are. Not saying that this is the case for the guy but LU has plenty of locals, I want us recruiting the best wherever they are. Quote
Big T Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Dionte played DE for the Dogs during his sophmore season and part of his junior season. Quote
coachacola Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 3 TEs are true freshmen so I doubt they'll see much playing time. Does anyone know when Henderson lasted played? I didn't see any stats from his time a Jackson State so he may be pretty rusty. Quote

Although I do think he can be a quality TE. My question mark's lie around his catching ability, how good are his hands? He was a pretty good basketball player for his HS so I would think he is fairly well coordinated but you never know till you see if for yourself. Quote
Guest becktobigs Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Mercer was part of Lamar's 2010 signing class but didn't graduate from Navarro in time to come last year. Quote
coachacola Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Mercer was part of Lamar's 2010 signing class but didn't graduate from Navarro in time to come last year. Here's what Scout had to say about Mercer: Smallish cornerback, he is speedy and has good quickness. Plays a bit soft in the zone, he can change directions and get to the receiver quickly. Does a good job of making tackles. Not a man to man defensive back but is solid playing zone defense Looks like a decent pickup for Lamar. Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 While we are on the subject of TE's I found this on Peydon McVey: Quote
Guest bigred360 Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Now, that is impressive for a HS senior!!! Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Now, that is impressive for a HS senior!!! Might make a good LB?? Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 PJ joined the site with the name youngtex. Cool! Quote
Guest bigred360 Posted September 1, 2011 Posted September 1, 2011 Yea, I saw that too. JP, welcome to Lamar and joining BRI. Quote
LamarAlum Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 PJ Henderson clip I noticed they weren't throwing to the TE's in the Texas College game. Based on this YouTube it looks like they need to find a way to get the ball to this new kid PJ Henderson. He definitely looks like he can catch and run with the ball. Quote

Yeah I like the way this kid runs, he's not very fast but he finds seams well and he sheads tackles, he's a strong runner. Don't worry about the throwing game, that game was a very poor indication of how we will play the rest of the year. We're still a pass oriented team. Welcome to the board, glad you're finding it useful! Quote
