4 Cards Selected in MLB Draft

Featured Replies

RHP Carson Lance 16th round to Detroit

C Brendan Arredondo 23rd round to Baltimore

RHP Jimmy Johnson 28th round to Arizona

OF Reid Russell 33rd round to Houston

Lance being a JR, he has the option to pass on the MLB and return for his SR season although if he does that he loses all negotiating leverage if he were to get drafted again next year.

I was surprised to see Russell go so low although I was surprised to see him go undrafted last year after he hit .354 with 18 HRs. His numbers were down this year to .317 with 10 HRs. The biggest knock I heard about him last year was his plate discipline. Last year he struck out 63 times to just 19 walks. This season he improved both catagories dropping his strikeouts to 45 (with 12 more ABs also) and more than doubled his walks to 41.

Lamar's 4 selection also lead the SLC.

Also look for OF Cutter McDowell to get picked up on a free agent deal

Was surprised that Cutter wasn't drafted. He can run, has a cannon for an arm, was the best hitter on the team this year and showed some power as well. All I can figure is they were worried about his history of injuries.

All four draftees have signed. Haven't found anything yet on McDowell.

Carson Lance now in Short Season A with Connecticut of the NYP League.

Reid Russell is with Tri-City in the NYP League

Bryndan Arredondo is with the Gulf Coast Orioles in the rookie Gulf Coast League.

Jimmy Johnson is with Missoula in the rookie Pioneer League.

Updates on two Cardinals already in the minors: Jonathan Dziedzic is off the DL with the AAA Omaha Storm Chasers. He had been dominant before the DL but hasn't pitched well since coming off it.

Will Hibbs who didn't give a run for the first two months of the season has been moved to Clearwater in the Advanced A Florida State League.

Two guys from the 2016 Cardinals are playing in the independent Frontier League: Enrique Oquendo is with Traverse City and Jacoby Middleton is with Normal for his second year.

One more. I forgot that Jayson McKinley is with Bowling Green in the Midwest League (low A). He hasn't been used much but has pitched well when used.
