There's like 7 RB's on the roster. White will get the bulk of the carries. D Randle looked pretty good during spring practices. Banks and Wanza jump out on tape and look to be immediate impact players possibly. Quote
spoonbill Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Super excited for this football season. I wish the practices weren't at 3 for a couple reasons. First, I don't get off work until 5 (personal) Second, it's hot enough at 6 to get the kids used to the Setx weather and that's about when most of their games will be played (kid's interest) Coach did say that the staff would be diligent with hydration. D Randle looked pretty good during spring practices. Banks and Wanza jump out on tape and look to be immediate impact players possibly. Coach Schultz mentioned at the SLC Media Day that they did that to try to get a little more speed in the backfield. Randle showed plenty of speed in his HS film but tore an ACL at the end of his senior year. Took a RS in '15 and still looked to be a little timid on it last year...also never got the opening to see if that speed was still there. While the potential is there for Banks and Wanza to come in and be immediate impact guys, you don't want to throw all of your eggs in that basket. I expect Banks to be used similar to what we saw with King last year and get touches in a variety of ways. If Wanza shows that he can be that home run threat then King might be utilized more in last year's capacity as well. I've said this before and I hate to make this comparison because Kade Harringtons don't grow on trees...but everything about Wanza's HS film has screamed Kade to me. They look eerily similar on tape at the same stage and their HS numbers even reflected that...even down to only having an offer from Lamar. About the only thing I've found different is Kade was a bit stockier than Wanza. Quote

Wanza is actually pretty close to Kade's size coming out of high school. His style is VERY similar....fast with a touch of tough running also. Banks basically looks like a King clone. Quote

KABrother88 Posted August 1, 2017 Author Posted August 1, 2017 Cards Close Second Day with First Practice In one of the earliest reporting dates in the history of the program, the Lamar University football players reported to campus to open preseason camp on the next to last day of July. After facing the media Sunday, the team stepped on the field Monday afternoon for their first official workout at Provost Umphrey Stadium. In a practice that lasted two hours, the Cardinals proved they were unwilling to yield to Mother Nature. The temperature exceeded 90 degrees throughout the day but the Cardinals muscled their way through the workout going through position drills before moving into the playbook. "Fortunately, most of these guys spent the summer here, so they have trained in this heat," said LU head coach Mike Schultz. "Not only are these guys competing against each other, but you are competing against the heat as well. I thought our guys did real well." Click For Full Article Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 1, 2017 Author Posted August 1, 2017 Lamar Receivers Appear On Netflix Documentary After Lamar University cornerback Rodney Randle watched the third episode of "Last Chance U" last week, he immediately fired off a text to the football team's group message. Randle, a junior, wanted to make sure everyone saw a couple of their new teammates - receivers Dorian Gaston and Isaiah Howard. The two made cameo appearances in the second season of the Netflix hit documentary, which included footage of East Mississippi Community College playing their Itawamba Community College. Gaston and Howard combined for almost 320 yards and three touchdowns in the game - a 44-42 EMCC win. Click Here For Full Article For those of you that do not follow the "Last Chance U" Netflix series it chronicles the JUCO powerhouse of East Mississippi Community College. In episode 3 of season 2, EMCC took on Itawamba Community college where Lamar WR Dorian Gaston and Isaiah Howard were playing and thanks to their efforts, nearly pulled the upset over then #6 EMCC. If you have not seen the series, it is an entertaining look at what happens at the JUCO level although I would suggest not watching it with kids around. Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 1, 2017 Author Posted August 1, 2017 Lamar Football Opens Fall Camp With Quarterback Competition Lamar University football entered fall camp on Monday without a starting quarterback for the third-straight season. The normalcy of a preseason quarterback competition isn't intimidating for returning quarterbacks seniors Andrew Allen and Blake McKenzie and sophomore Adam Morse but they understand the need for one of them to step up and take control of the offense sooner rather than later. LU played four different quarterbacks last season because of injury and subpar play and the group's inconsistency was the focal point of the team's 3-8 season. The Cardinals finished ninth in the Southland Conference in passing yards, averaging just 191.9 yards per game. Click For Full Article Quote

spoonbill Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 Lamar Football Opens Fall Camp With Quarterback Competition Click For Full Article The most interesting thing in this article in my opinion is that Dodd states that multiple QB's will get playing time in the non-conference games regardless who's 1,2, or 3 so they will be better prepared for injuries. The last regime went all out in these games for a win to pad their record. Quote
spoonbill Posted August 2, 2017 Posted August 2, 2017 The coaches have been stressing team unity big time. Making them eat together, etc. Sunday they are going to church together as a team. I think I like this staff! :-) Quote

KABrother88 Posted August 3, 2017 Author Posted August 3, 2017 Senior Lineman Lighter, Pain Free After Adjusting Diet Matt Oubre spent last season with nagging injuries and pain throughout his legs. The discomfort forced the Lamar Cardinals' senior offensive lineman to play in just seven games and undergo offseason foot surgery. He didn't want to go through another season with the same pain, so he decided to make a change during spring camp and since then dropped 40 pounds - from 325 to 285. After camp opened Monday, a leaner Oubre noticed he was pain-free and Lamar's coaching staff is expecting a strong, injury-free final season as a result. Click For Full Article Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 4, 2017 Author Posted August 4, 2017 Lamar Quarterback Race Picks Up From 2016 Few football teams have had to endure the headache that was the dwindling quarterback depth at Lamar in 2016. Blake McKenzie was also ready out for the second straight season with another ACL tear in camp. Carson Earp shared starts with Andrew Allen before suffering a season-ending injury to his throwing shoulder. Brett Cox was academically ineligible and Clayton Turner moved to wide receiver, leaving two freshmen expected to redshirt when Allen himself went down with a broken collarbone on homecoming. That same game, Case Robinson sustained a broken bone in his hand, and Adam Morse started the remaining three games — with wide receiver Michael Handy and Robinson taking snaps in the finale. As preseason camp begins Monday with a new head coach, the quarterback quandary isn’t solved. But the race is starting over. “Everybody wants to be the man in college football,” said Morse, the sophomore from Port Neches-Groves. “It’s the spotlight. Everybody wants it. To get it, you’ve got to work hard and keep pushing for it.” Click For Full Article Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 4, 2017 Author Posted August 4, 2017 Cardinals Start Camp; UNT Of No Concern Yet Of the 29 practices the NCAA allots each Division I team before its first game of the season, only five of Lamar’s will be dedicated to focusing on North Texas. “The first thing we have to do is teach the offense and the defense and develop our special teams,” Mike Schultz said a day before beginning his first preseason camp at Lamar. “We’ve had 15 practices [in the spring]; we’re not where we need to be offensively, defensively or special teams, but we don’t have to be. We’ve still got 29 practices to where we need to be. I think the first thing we need to do is get the foundation set on what we want to do offensively, defensively and special teams. Lamar began camp at 6 a.m. Monday and followed that up with an afternoon workout. The 91-degree mostly sunny afternoon wasn’t hot enough to force the Cardinals to a workout later in the day. KABrother88 Posted August 5, 2017 Author Posted August 5, 2017 Lamar has officially announced the addition of QB Darrell Colbert. Former SMU quarterback Darrell Colbert is transferring to Lamar University announced Cardinals head coach Mike Schultz Friday. A dual-threat option, Colbert has spent the past three seasons with the Mustangs including his redshirt season. "Darrell is a strong runner and is very elusive," said Schultz. "He provides us with another option in our battle for the starting quarterback position. He does some really good things on the field." Colbert played in 12 games over the course of the past two seasons passing for 240 yards with a touchdown. He enters the 2017 campaign with two years of eligibility remaining for the Red and White. Click Here For Full Article Maybe the most telling part is where Schultz says he and Allen are running 1-2 in the QB battle. Another comment that was made in a previous article posted here, OC Dan Dodd mentioned wanting a QB who can beat you with his legs as well as his arm. While I like Morse's a lot, he doesn't fit that mold. I see him as more of a Caleb Berry in beating you in the quick passing game and taking what's available in the running game. Reading between the line it looks like a 2 man race at this time. Quote

Still no Haynes or ILoa, I guess that they are not coming. You can have players with the same number so long as they are not on the field at the same time. Happens a lot in college because the sizes of the rosters. They will issue one to a offensive player and one to a defensive player...only time it becomes an issue is on special teams. I remember a few years ago Lamar actually got a 5 yard penalty on a kick-off because there were 2 players with the same number on the field at the same time. I think they are still playing with the roster however. There are a few guys I know for certain that are on campus but not listed yet. I have seen though where SO DB Blake George and JR TE Duncan McVey are no longer listed. Based off of George's twitter it looks like he transferred to Navarro JC. Quote
spoonbill Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 Haven't seen Haynes or Iloa personally. McVey is hanging up his cleats due to excessive concussions. He should be able to finish his degree and he's helping out similar to a grad asst. Quote
Dracula Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 Are the practices open to the public and, if they are, does anybody know what the weekend schedule is? Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 8, 2017 Author Posted August 8, 2017 So I went back and looked at Haynes' twitter and he has deleted the post announcing his commitment. Turned to google to see if I could find out anything. What I found was that in May, Haynes was arrested for robbery. However, later a friend admitted to the crime and said Haynes was not a part of it. Charges against Haynes were dropped in late June. Not sure if this had anything to do with the situation or not. DL looks to be critical position group this year as we can ill afford to lose anyone to injuries due to lack of depth. Quote
