KABrother88 Posted August 8, 2017 Author Posted August 8, 2017 Haven't seen Haynes or Iloa personally. McVey is hanging up his cleats due to excessive concussions. He should be able to finish his degree and he's helping out similar to a grad asst. Had heard previously that McVey had had a few concussions...that was my first assumption when I saw him no longer on the roster. Can't blame him a bit. Quote
puddin tane Posted August 8, 2017 Posted August 8, 2017 So I went back and looked at Haynes' twitter and he has deleted the post announcing his commitment. Turned to google to see if I could find out anything. What I found was that in May, Haynes was arrested for robbery. However, later a friend admitted to the crime and said Haynes was not a part of it. Charges against Haynes were dropped in late June. Not sure if this had anything to do with the situation or not. DL looks to be critical position group this year as we can ill afford to lose anyone to injuries due to lack of depth. did we recruit him before or after he was arrested? Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 8, 2017 Author Posted August 8, 2017 did we recruit him before or after he was arrested? Before...he originally committed a couple weeks after signing day. Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 8, 2017 Author Posted August 8, 2017 The Power Of The Unknown How does that headline relate to anything regarding the 2017 Lamar University football team? The purpose of a headline is to quickly and briefly draw the reader's attention to the story. With that being said, there is a better than not chance this particular headline has failed the reader, and for that I apologize. The goal of this particular headline was simply an attempt to help ease the mind of Cardinals fans who are believing the preseason hype, or lack thereof. At the recent Southland Conference Media Days in Houston, head coach Mike Schultz and selected players went in front of the media to talk about the upcoming season. While all three represented the university in such a way that brought added excitement about the upcoming season, it wasn't hard to notice that the majority of the hype was centered around one school in particular. The Cardinals enter the season seventh in the Southland Conference's preseason poll (which is voted on by the league's head coaches and media relations directors). In addition to that, LU only had one player on the Preseason All-Southland squad (DB Rodney Randle) and the Cards didn't receive any attention in the Stats FCS Preseason Top 25 poll. Can't blame him a bit. Great kid and a pretty good tight end to boot. Gotta take care of the noggin. The last couple he got weren't on big hits. I wish him luck in his future endeavors. Quote
spoonbill Posted August 8, 2017 Posted August 8, 2017 Are the practices open to the public and, if they are, does anybody know what the weekend schedule is? Fall practices are closed to the public just like spring practices. Parents are allowed access after getting the proper credentials. They practice at 3 every day, weather permitting. Quote

KABrother88 Posted August 9, 2017 Author Posted August 9, 2017 Another name I noticed missing from the roster is OL Jospeh Gonzales. He was a starter at RT last year so it's a big blow. DB Nate Jones who signed out of Tyler JC has been added. Quote

He was solid. Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 10, 2017 Author Posted August 10, 2017 A Look at the 2017 LU Running Backs It can be argued that in the world of sports too much youth is a curse. Lamar University head football coach Mike Schultz tends to look at youth from a different perspective. "When you think of the word 'youth' people will immediately jump to inexperience, but it can also be a blessing. Sometimes the younger players don't know that they don't know." Throughout camp LU fans will hear the word "young" tossed around quite a bit, and it's not an excuse. Not only are the Cardinals young – 13 returning starters and only two with three years of experience – but every player is having to adjust to a new system. "When we talk about youth, it's not just freshman we're referring to," said Schultz. "We have several transfers, junior college guys who have experience at the collegiate level but these guys are all young to our system." Click For Full Article Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 10, 2017 Author Posted August 10, 2017 It sounds like Wanza is quickly making his mark. Interesting to see that Kendrick King wasn't mentioned...wonder if he is getting moved back to WR with the emergence of Wanza? I just hope the staff gets King somewhere and he sticks. I feel like that was a detriment to Mike Handy's Cardinal career. Started at RB, moved to WR, moved back to RB, then back to WR, then added emergency QB to his résumé to top it off. Quote

IMHO I think Wanza is gonna be a stud. I usually don't pay too much attention to listed positions of some "hybrid" or "tweener" guys. A lot of times they get moved to other positions and the roster is never updated to reflect it. Last season we had guys playing LB listed as DBs and guys playing DL listed as LB. I was just referring to what I mentioned earlier about Schultz at the SLC Media Day saying King was moved to RB to get more speed in the backfield. Quote

King played some RB in the scrimmage today and looked good. White didn't play a lot, probably to get a look at the others. Imo Wanza is gonna be a stud. Maybe not this year, bit he looks to be legit. He pops when he touches the ball. From what I saw Allen had a solid scrimmage. His deep passing game and touch could be better but he looked fine. Colbert didn't look very good at all. He got frustrated with his line at one point. He's the fastest of the bunch at QB tho. His deep passing and touch are lacking also. he looks run first a lot. Morse has the best arm in camp by far. From my guess he had around 200 yds passing...80 yd td bomb, 50-60 yd completion and a 25 or so yd td fade in the corner. He lacks the speed of Colbert but looked really good. McKensie didn't really show me much, average in everything. There were quite a few bad snaps from our veteran center. Gotta clean that up. Everything is from the shotgun. The freshman kicker looked decent. They tested him pretty good. O-line, D-line, and overall defense looked decent. I don't think I saw an injury which is a testament to the conditioning the coaches have mandated. Even tho it was 8-940 am, it was HOT. Can't wait for the season opener!! #PeckEm Quote

Nice open field run by Wood/bad routes by the dbs on the play. Quote
KABrother88 Posted August 15, 2017 Author Posted August 15, 2017 A Look at the 2017 Cardinals’ QBs Lamar University offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dan Dodd is in his first season with the Cardinals. Dodd was hired by head coach Mike Schultz just days after Schultz became the program's second head coach since its rebirth. When Dodd took over coaching the quarterbacks, I'm not sure if he completely understood the Cards recent history at the position. The previous two seasons have looked more like a mash unit than a stable of signal callers set to guide a football team. Last season, every quarterback on the roster had his number called and everyone eventually went down with an injury. The Cardinals lost their starting quarterbacks on the first drive of a game in consecutive weeks, and were forced to burn two redshirts in the same game all due to injuries. In was a similar situation in 2015, as senior Joe Minden was injured in the game at Baylor allowing then junior Carson Earp to take over as the starter. Three weeks later, Earp was injured forcing Minden back in the lineup the day after he had been cleared by the doctors. The team's No. 3 QB on the depth chart was lost for the year to an injury just days prior to the season-opener. Click For Full Article Quote

I have seen him in pictures with the quarterbacks but couldn't find out who he was. He isn't listed on the roster nor was he mentioned in the QB article so it looks like he may be a walk-on. His father is Harvey Williams who played for LSU and was a first round pick by the Chiefs and played in the NFL for 8 seasons. Edited August 17, 2017 by KABrother88 Quote
