Maybe Lamar’s Problems Aren’t That Bad

Lamar isn’t the only school with issues around its athletic programs. After one season, there are people who want head football coach Mike Schulz fired. The AD just resigned. After all the bitching about the coaching decisions in various sports you would think Lamar is a black hole for athletics. No matter how bad things get around here I have never been ashamed of anything that has taken place because nobody did anything but try to make things better. Some choices have been good and others, not so much. That’s life.

Next time you want to tear your hair out over the state of the football or basketball or baseball programs keep in mind; This thing with Tennessee is a joke. The big, bad SEC affiliated Tennessee Volunteers look like a bunch of idiots. They had a done deal with coach Greg Schiano who has been a good coach for a very long time. He began his coaching career at Penn State as a grad assistant and then as a paid assistant from 1990-1995. He had a couple of other jobs along the way but he really made his bones as the coach who turned the football program at Rutgers completely around. He made a perennial doormat program into a relevant football school that played in only the school’s second ever bowl game in 2005 and notched the school’s first ever bowl win the following year. Between 2005 and 2011 Rutgers played in 6 bowl games winning 5 with the only stumble coming in 2010 when Rutgers’ player DT Eric LeGrand suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed. Rutgers team when through a bad season after losing LeGrand but Schiano is credited with being a key to LeGrand’s recovery. Schiano helped out LeGrand’s family in every way he could and Schiano was with him every day he was in the hospital. LeGrand was thought to be a paraplegic for the rest of his life but he has regained the use of his arms and shoulders and he has regained feeling in the rest of his body. Schiano did do anything but lend moral support to his player but if asked Eric LeGrand about Schiano I’ll bet it would be nothing but praise.

Schiano coached two years with the Tampa Bay Bucs but it was clear he was a better college coach than an NFL coach. For the past 2 seasons Schiano has been the Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator with Ohio State. It looked like Schiano would get his chance to coach a major college program until his tenure with Penn State back in the early 1990’s was brought up and Schiano’s name was linked to the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal. Schiano denied any knowledge of the activities of Sandusky but it didn’t matter to Tennessee who crawfished out of the deal this past weekend. It’s a shame that Schiano is getting his name dragged through the mud and it is pretty much a consensus that Schiano is the victim in this case and Tennessee is playing the part of the cowardly villain. Want to get rid of Coach Schulz? Fine, as long as you hire Schiano to take his place.

As far as I know Lamar's Mens Basketball team is not being investigated by the FBI either (unlike USC, Auburn, Arizona, Louisville, Miami & Oklahoma State).

In all honesty, I appreciate your optimism and finding a silver lining. Unfortunately, it gets lost on these boards because we seem to have a few (too many) members on here that you can't make happy no matter what. They will go out of their way to bitch and complain about anything.
