Notes from Woodard’s press conference

A few notes from Ray Woodard’s weekly press conference today:

– DePauldrick Garrett (separated shoulder) and Octavious Logan (dislocated elbow) have not practiced this week, leaving Mike Venson as the lone running back with extensive experience this season. Redshirt freshman Caleb Harmon (Port Neches-Groves) and sophomore Jacob Hanna (Lumberton) are taking snaps with the first-team offense.

– Don’t look for Jeremy Johnson to get carries. Although Todd Whitten said the idea of the athletic Johnson moving to running back to help alleviate injury problems at that position is a good one, he thinks staying at quarterback is best for Johnson’s long-term development.

– Johnson is running what Woodard calls a triple option offense to replicate the offense run by Texas State. Woodard said Texas State’s offense requires defenders to stick to their gap and player assignments. Veering away from their individual responsibilities could allow Texas State to pick up some long gains.

– Lamar will practice Friday at the University of Texas practice bubble. The team leaves Beaumont Friday morning and will stay the night in Austin, allowing for a short drive Saturday to San Marcos.

Now, I don't feel completely stupid for bringing up the idea of Johnson moving to RB. At least you know it was talked about by Coach Whitten's answer.

Great news! Both JJ Hayes and Marcus Jackson will play this Saturday.

Jeremy Johnson has been replicating the Texas State triple option during practice.

"He really has looked good running the triple option this week," Woodard said. "Whew, man."

Johnson best replicates the play of Texas State quarterback Shaun Rutherford, whose 275-yard average in total offense against three Southland teams would rank fourth in league games only.

Texas State does not play in the Southland as it prepares to join the Western Athletic Conference in 2012.

"He really does enjoy doing that stuff," Woodard said of Johnson running an option offense. "He gives us a great look."

With a quarterback as quick as Johnson - timed at 4.3 seconds over 40 yards, Woodard said - "you better have your assignments down," the coach added.

Doesn't sound good if JJ is having a great timing running the option. That means our defense is having problems picking up their assignments. I hope they pick it up by Saturday.

Hopefully it means JJ is just that good. :)

I'm wary going into this game. If we can avoid an awful second quarter we have a chance. I'll have my fingers crossed during that time.
