The sideline is where Jeremy Johnson is closest to his mentor.

That's where he continues to learn.

Johnson prepares weekly to start but seldom plays.

"You get mad because you want to play, but it's all about timing," the backup quarterback said. "I guess it wasn't my time to play yet."

His time came Saturday at Texas State. That's where coach Ray Woodard turned to the redshirt freshman from Silsbee.

The Cardinals needed a spark. Johnson provided it.

That's a good story about Jeremy. I hope the story is wrong about Jeremy not playing until 2012. The only way I want that to happen is if Bevil starts performing more like he did in the SELU game.

Say what you want to about that competition but more of Bevil's throws were 10-15 yards and not 40-50 yard bombs like we saw continuously against TxSt. I don't know if that is play calling or the quarterback but we need to figure out how to drive up the field without the aid of one huge pass. Those passes are only going to be there against teams with bad secondaries, NWST and TxSt had better than average secondaries.

If we a losing to UCA I can see Johnson coming in like he did against Texas State.
