coachacola
Lamar football will scrimmage at 4 p.m. today at Provost Umphrey Stadium with a deeper and more athletic defensive backfield than it had last season, coach Ray Woodard said Thursday. Players returned from injury and junior college transfers give Woodard and defensive coordinator Bill Bradley more to work with as they continue to install a 3-4 defensive front. "I think the combination of having Jordan Garrett, Branden Thomas and Steven Murray-Sesay all healthy, and the addition of Nahshon Davis, Tyrus McGlothen and Jermaine Longino, I think we're deeper and more athletic," Woodard said. Defensive backs Garrett and Thomas were limited by injuries last season, and Murray-Sesay, also a defensive back, missed the entire season. Junior college transfers Davis and McGlothen, both defensive backs, and Longino, a middle linebacker, have helped put the defense a bit farther along than the offense, which is still adjusting to blitz packages put in this week, Woodard said.
