It's official: Joseph Okafor signs with LU

Called a happy Coach Woodard for a quote on Okafor and he replied:

 

"Hes a big man with great feet. He had a solid visit with us and I think he'll fit in here at Lamar."

Forgot to add that I asked if he'd play OL or DE and it'll be DE.

I think it's safe to say that the current depth chart was just a formality.

I wouldn't be surprised to see 5 or 6 players on the 2-deep this August that are not on the current depth chart. If the offense can show a slight improvement and the defense a big improvement over last year then they'll win more than 4 or 5 games.

It's good that we have taken care of these needs first at WR and now along the OL and DL.

 

I really want to believe that we can have a good year this year. I think that most of the scholarships are gone now because we only had around 2.5 scholarships left and I think that Johnson and Okafor probably got close to full scholarships.

 

It will be fun to see how these new guys along with the freshmen fit in and change the team when fall camp starts.

Weren't the 2.5 scholarships before Oden and Campbell departed? If I'm right about that, I was thinking we had a few more scholarships.

Well Oden was never even at practice so I'm not sure if Woodard counted him. I think they knew he was gone long before it was announced, I personally heard about him being gone way before camp. But yes Campbell and Johnson were at least included in that tally. We've signed three guys since then so maybe it's 1.5. (Wempa, Johnson, Okafor) We also have to wonder if any walkons got partial distributions already, Woodard said left over money would be distributed to a few of the walk-ons.

Good call Mike. I am excited to see what all these new signings can produce. Some of the places we were short, we have now added some depth. This is good. Okafor is a big lineman that will cause problems for opposing o-lineman.

man i wish jacody coleman wouldve reconsidered and played another season..i mean JC at middle linebacker and Okafor and malbrough as our DE's. whoo! I just cant visualize the run attack with Chavis and Malbrough at LB this year.

I might be wrong.. i hope Bill Bradley has a few tricks he can use against SLC offenses.

According to Rivals, Okafor was recruited by Joe DeForest who left OSU earlier this year to join the WVU staff.

One more note on Okafor.

 

He needed to pass some classes this summer session in order to transfer and I was told he made the grades. He was here in town yesterday and was told by my source that "he looked great."
