IMO i think the university should invest in a cannon for the home football games. 8lb, 12 lb, whatever, no problem. Something medium sized would be ideal. If youve never been to a UT, aTm, or Tech game, this will be something new and exciting.

Anytime, during a home game, the team scores a TD(including PAT), kicks a succesful FG, Kickoff, or any BIG defensive play, the cannon will be fired off. Off course its only shooting blanks (no cannonball) but it also leaves a cloud of grey smoke. If this idea were to be made into a reality, LU games at home would be even more fun.

First time I read this title I thought you meant you were purchasing a cannon camera to take pictures of TD's and Field goals. :D

Great Idea, I think something like that would really enhance the atmosphere.

My first two years at Lamar (65-66) Lamar had a cannon. It was unbelievably loud, and when there was no breeze the smoke hung around forever. And that was long before the Montagne was built to echo back the noise. Eventually the SLC banned such things from conference games, the cannon disappeared, and I don't remember anyone being too upset. I believe the ban is still in effect, and if so it could only be used at non-conference games.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that college in Lake Charles have a cannon at their non-conference games? Maybe I'm confusing them with some other school. A cannon would be fine but how about something more original and local - like an oil well that becomes a gusher after each score - complete with a lot of monster sub-woofers with subsonic "rumbles" that really shake the place. Of course, in a strong wind we might soak half the stadium. LOL. Oh well, just a thought.

Ive worked at ExxonMobil plant (behind the Stadium and Montagne) and the Alarms get pretty annoying after about 15 sec lol. The idea is original but it would be to difficult to choreograph and make happen.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't LU have a big bell at the top of the hill that we would ring after every Score. Bring back the bell and tradition ???

Yes we have a cannon. Your besties in LC dont have one anymore because of complaints to the city and the U from the residents of the surrounding neighborhood.

I wonder how Beaumont would take that. Sam's cannon is loud. I think it would be extra loud resonating off the Montagne Center.

I'm pretty sure SFA has a cannon too.

Yes LU did have a bell at the top of the hill on the south endzone. It was pretty big too. I forgot about that.

So far we got:

Giant Bell

Train Horn

Cannon

Plant Alarm (not gonna happen)

Note: we need somethin that will pump up all the quiet spectators on the 'pressbox' side of stadium. Our cowbells arent doin the job..

I like the train horn idea, easier to get than a cannon, and it makes more sense, we're right next to a switching yard. Beaumont has TONS of trains. I just think it suits us the best.

What I'm worried about though is the AD will see this and just say yawn. We're not going to force a tradition. Some people don't realize that traditions start somewhere. We haven't had football for over 20 years, it's our responsibility to start the new Traditions that will define Lamar football.

TSU-SM has a train horn that they play as well.

Our cannon(s) are owned and operated by the Army ROTC, both of which sit in front of their building during the week and are then transported over to the field.

In HS, we had a few guys who bought a 18-wheeler horn and sat outside the fence and blared it whenever we score.

Livingston does the same thing. That eighteen wheeler horn get very annoying really quickly especially when it's in your stadium.

How about a ships fog horn? Symbolises the Port of Beaumont.

I think the reason horns of any kind get annoying is because the person operating them wants to play them for so long. Cannons are a nice, quick BOOM and then it's done.

i loved the air raid siren..big red would come out and the siren would blare..and we'd chunk the heck outta the ball......kinda like..'here we come, we're gonna throw it, try to stop us'.....nobody really did, unfortunately, we had no D
