Mike Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 - The level of athlete at Lamar has gone up as a whole compared to years past. These guys should be ready to compete in the fall. - WR depth got much better with the editions of Kevin Johnson and BJ Oyefeso. Based on just the eyeball test both should be able to pick up right where JJ and Marcus left off. - Matt Bergeron has some very nice parents. They chatted up me and Chris Dabe for awhile and I can say they are excited for their son and have high expectations for him and this team. - Michael Hargis is a freshman that looks ready to play. He's been working hard since graduation and has already put on some size. - Both Kevin Johnson and Joseph Okafor were asked and replied that they had NO issue with Herschel Sims following them to Lamar if he ends up here. - On Herschel Sims....it's still not a done deal as of an hour ago when I left. I know the staff is working on it and I expect this to go down but it hasn't officially yet. - Seeing Joseph Okafor for the first time in person he's definitely a DL and not an OL in my opinion. I can see why he wouldn't have wanted to make that switch. - Jayce Nelson is taller than I remembered. I know he has great hands and decent speed and when he puts on some college weight I think he's gonna be a player that surprises many. - Kevin Johnson stated he "checked out and considered every school in the Southland Conference" but only took visits to Lamar and Sam Houston State. He stated he ultimately just felt more comfortable here and and liked where he fit on the depth chart and he's happy that he's in Beaumont. -Coach Woodard and his staff and this team are all class acts. The act of kindness they demonstrated today towards my little brother (with no camera's around) is something I know my brother or I won't forget. (I'll share more on this later) Couple Quotes from WR Kevin Johnson: Why did he ultimately choose Lamar? "It started from the time I visited campus. I was blown away by the facilities, the coaches and the camaraderie. This is a real exciting place and I'm really excited to be here." What was your visit like and what impact do you expect to make? "The visit changed my whole mind. I wasn't too high on Lamar but talking to Coach Barbay and him wanting me to come visit and I completely did a 180. I was blown away, I was ready to come down here and play. My expectations for now are just getting to know the guys and slowly become a leader because that's what I am." Big T Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 I had a final today and when I got on campus I realized I was out of scantrons so I ran over to the book store to buy some. I went straight to where the scantrons were grabbed a pack and got in line to check out and the line was really long. A couple of minutes later a couple got into line behind me and they were completly loaded down with Lamar gear from clothes to a cooler to the little seats you can use if you don't want to sit on bleachers and so on. Me being me I turned around and started to talk to them and come to find out they were the parents of one of the new players coming in. So I started to ask them questions on how they liked Lamar and the campus and athletic facilities and the coaches. Once they started to talk about it they wouldn't shut up lol they went on and on and on about the hospitality and red carpet treatment they received from the school and how much they love it here and how happy they were that their son chose to come here. It really gave me a great feeling that the coaches and Lamar are really doing this the right way. Quote

Guest CardAmbassador Posted July 12, 2012 Posted July 12, 2012 Thanks for the update, I love the excitement that this incoming group is showing, I think it has alot to do with recruiting. I don't know what changed, but it just sounds like we took a huge leap in the right direction as far as recruiting is concerned. Quote
