Is the gap a problem with our players not disciplined enough to work hard in the weight room? If we are going to have the success everyone desires our guys are going to have to get a lot stronger to be able to do the job. Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 its called recruiting, our guys are coming in undersized, we have to develop our line from scratch in some ways. Brock came in at under 250 lbs, ULL is an established FBS they're recruiting guys that are much bigger. We recruit projects. Quote
JJWooten Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 They were talking about it during the broadcast that ULL is known for their S&C programming and that they put a heavy emphasis on that in all sports. Quote

Shouldn't every program?? Hey Woot, how does Sam stack up against LU and ULL? Quote

Being a statistics guy (as I believe you are somewhat yourself) I am looking for some answers to why we are being dominated on the lines. I am not trying to disparage anyone just looking for some answers. Want as much as anyone for LU to succeed and start being competitive. I am just a fan and not a coach so I am not an expert. By the way talked with one of my friends at church who is a McNeese alum and fan and he was raving about the new O-line coach for the cowboys and what a difference he has made in their play, of course judging by the first game. Need a whole season to judge his performance. Quote
coachacola Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Our 2 returning starters are upperclassmen (Gillam and Robertson) are both about 270. The newcomers (Kelso, Babin and Brock) average about 290, who are replacing 3 guys that averaged 318 (skewed by Campbell's 365 weight). If Hunter Conn sticks with Lamar, he already has the size and strength as some of our lineman now. I looked at his stats: 6'5 280, Bench Press: 315; Squat: 405 But for now let's see if the guys we have now can improve each game. Lamar won't be playing FBS schools every game so it's hard to judge them after this one game. Quote
puddin tane Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Ray has had 4 years to get lineman in here ..... Quote

Shouldn't every program?? Hey Woot, how does Sam stack up against LU and ULL? Agree, but maybe ULL puts more emphasis on it then most? I honestly have no idea how to even rate a S&C program. Quote
JJWooten Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Ray has had 4 years to get lineman in here ..... I know you all disagree with this, but it has to start with the transfers you guys bring in. The OL needs time to work together and play as a unit, which is hard to do when coaches are constantly shuffling pieces and bringing guys in who leave after one year (Campbell and Oden). There's a reason Gilliam is so damn good, and it's because he's been at Lamar the longest. If Woodard would just recruit guys and stick with them, they can grow as a unit and get better. Quote
Dream Weaver Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 gillam, babin, kelso, brock, bailey were all recruited out of high school, it's a shame bailey flunked out. babin was a starter along with gillam as true freshmen in 2010, kelso was suppose to redshirt but had to move to defense then got hurt and redshirted, not an easy road for him. i say give these guys some time to come together, 1 game against a fbs team doesn't reveal much. puddin tane Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 i agree Woot also, it seems we move alot of players back and forth..def line to oline... Quote

And this was their first game to play together. It can take 1-2 years for OL to mesh and play well together, not 1 summer. Quote

Guest CardAmbassador Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 hmmm---Ray didnt think they were physically outmached very much I didnt get to see it..couldnt get cajun pay per view to work..what did it look like..sounded like an ass whooping on the line... There were times when the qb's had more than enough time to throw. I don't think it was that bad on pass plays although there were a few plays I can recall especially with the bad snaps that the QB just didn't have enough time. The running game in the first half was what was depressing, we didn't open any holes on the line, we really couldn't run it in the first half because the O line just wasn't up to the task, so we were out matched there. The bad snaps pissed me off more than anything. That's not acceptable, the QB can't pick the ball up off the ground every time and expect to make a play, just not possible. Berry made a great play with one of his bad snaps but most of the time the QBs just got thrown to the ground. Quote
coachacola Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 ULL's nose tacke was a 6'3 330 pound sophomore. This was his first career start but did play a lot last year. He was a rivals 3-star recruit. One defensive end was a senior who originally signed with LSU. The other was a 285 sophomore who didn't play much last year. They were considered the weak spot of the ULL defense. Going into the game everyone knew that Lamar's OL was the weak spot, it proved to be weaker than theirs. Lamar won't be facing that big of a defensive line every week in the SLC. Quote

And whoever the freshman is (please provide names in the future) maybe they will be a leader in the weight room and bring the other guys up and earn a starting spot real soon!!! We need "road graders" & "bull dozers" on that O-line!! Quote

Guest CardAmbassador Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 strength is not everything on an offensive line, you have to have some quickness too. If a guy is over weight he is going to get beat by smaller quicker defensive players rushing the QB. Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 330 lbs NT IS NOT SMALL! obviously you have a horse in this race. I wasn't talking about a NT, I'm talking about DEs and LBs rushing the QB. Quote
BigNasty92 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 330 lbs NT IS NOT SMALL! No..but it's FAT....especially on a 6'2" frame. Quote
