coachacola Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Playing against a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team for the first time since reinstating football in 2010, Lamar University couldn't overcome four first half turnovers Saturday evening at Cajun Field in falling 40-0 to former conference rival Louisiana-Lafayette in the season opener. The Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) converted Lamar's turnovers directly into 16 points as they scored all 40 points in the first half. Lamar (0-1), which will host Prairie View A&M Saturday at 7 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium in the home opener, took better care of the ball in the second half but could not mount an offensive attack to cut into the UL lead. Guest NorthoftheBorder Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I still have confidence that the new staff can put this team together to be competitive the rest of the way. We will need a very competitive showing against Hawaii or we will have to win early in conference and against a top tier team, I guess that being UCA to get attendance up the rest of the year. PVA&M will be a small crowd. That just how we are in the Triangle, you have to win or we don't show. We are a sad bunch!!! Quote
coachacola Posted September 2, 2012 Author Posted September 2, 2012 How the game was lost: LU kicks off, ULL returns it to the their 42 yard line. Special teams allows ULL to start in excellent field position, they kick a field goal. 3-0 LU's first possession, QB is sacked and fumbles the ball. Short field for ULL and they score. 10-0 LU gets the ball, makes a first down. Now 3rd and 3 on LU 37, Sims fumbles. LU defense stops ULL from moving the ball but they are close enough to kick a FG. 13-0 At this point there's 6 minutes left in the 1st half. ULL has 4 first downs, LU 1. But like last year, LU is letting the opponent start their drives in excellent field position. LU's 3rd possession: they make a 1st down then Kelso makes a bad snap and it's now 2nd ans 26. Drive killed, LU punts, ULL returns the ball 27 yards to LU 28. Another short field for ULL, another 7 points. 20-0 LU gets the ball and it's 3 and out, but Kahler makes a great punt and ULL has the ball on their 11. So what happens? Bad tackling on the receiver (3 LU players miss a tackle) leads to a 86 yard gain. ULL soon scores again 27-0 Again like the blowout losses last year, the opponent scores quickly early in the game. Next possession, Berry in at QB, Soto makes a nice 21 yard catch, but of course fumbles which sets up ULL for another easy 3 points. 30-0 Next possession, LU makes a few first downs and gets into UL territory for the first time in the game. Berry then throws an interception, followed by another FG by ULL. 33-0 LU goes 3 and out on their possession, then ULL drives about 55 yards and scores. 40-0 Game is effectively over, like so many games last year. A positive spin on this is that the offense is new. Lot's of new players learning a new system. They will get better as the season goes on. The defense really only gave up that one big play for 86 yards. Quote

Guest LU 17 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Forget that, I'll be there on Saturday...LU is my team and I will be there. I don't live in the triangle, so I guess my attitude must be different. Quote

You arnt on the same planet as UCA, they are a solid team and it showed yesterday. If ya'll don't beat PVAM i doubt you will win anymore than 1 or 2 conference games. Keep playing like yall did yesterday and the SAM/SFA/UCA/MSU games will be blow outs. The Southland has already shown it is a better conference than last year, can Lamar catch up? Quote

Guest Hookem14 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Blue chip QB, stud Oklahoma State WR, stud Oklahoma State RB, and an O-line that after four years in the making couldn’t blow over a sheet of notebook paper and we still can’t put points on the board against second and third teamers in a whole half of football………Absolutely Pathetic Coaching…….No Excuses!!! Sam was middle of the pack for the majority of the 2000s with Whitten at the helm. Deep playoff run in 2004 and then 6-5 seasons. Each team has ups and downs, it's just a matter of when, not if. None of us are naive enough to believe we'll be top 3 for the rest of our lives. Quote

Guest LU 17 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Hey nickels, since you feel the need to input on our site, I'm going to check some Baylor and A&M fan sites and see if you are making season predictions for their teams. Or, are you just one of those people that hide behind their computers and stirs up trouble. Why don't you stay on your site and talk about the time you saw one of the SHSU football coaches at the store and you got to shake his hand. Quote

Disagree, we were competitive with McNeese and UCA last year. In fact I think this years defense would really have helped us against those two teams. Quote

People need to stop bringing up what would have or could have, or what did or didn’t happen and start realizing and acknowledging what IS happening! What is happening is a bunch of kids recruited to run the spread having to switch to a pro style offense a few months ago, then getting thrown into their first game versus a decent FBS team on the road. They'll get better as the season progresses and hopefully be ready to go by conference time. They should compete better next week versus Prarie View. Quote

So where did he go wrong in that analysis? Lamar only has 4 starters back on offense, they were not going to step into their first game against a FBS team and score much. Quote
Guest CardAmbassador Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Said it somewhere else, I'll say it again here, I would take this years offense over last years all day long. We actually had drives that consisted of more than throw the long ball to Marcus or JJ. We worked the middle of the field, we worked the flat, we ran the ball, we basically looked like a real offense at times. The problem was the blocking was sometimes terrible and the 7 or 8 bad snaps were all at terrible times, you limit those mistakes and TO (things that can be fixed) and you're talking about a different story on offense.
