Yeah, I would take what he says with a grain of salt but he sounds legit. Like you say, we will have to just wait see what happens.

I think App St is destined for another conference besides the Sun Belt, they seem too far out of the footprint, especially with MTSU leaving (and possibly WKU). It makes sense to add Lamar and Georgia Southern because that balances out Texas State and Georgia State.

I think it's possible that Lamar gets in now to make Texas State happy, at least temporarily. And if Texas State leaves in a year or two then SHSU could take their place. That's if SHSU doesn't get invited with LU right now, or maybe SHSU gets the nod over LU at this point, hard to say.

If it's true that Lamar talked to the Sun Belt yesterday then they must have some plans out there for expanding the stadium. Probably not right away but probably in 2 or 3 years.

Sounds like he was touching base with the schools this week. With the AD interviews, the rumor on the Lamar board about a 1 oclock meeting, and everything else we heard. Next week could be interesting. I could see a couple of invites coming right away and then a few more in the next couple of weeks.

ACC grabs Beast, Beast grabs CUSA, CUSA grabs SBC, SBC grabs FCS. I think that is pretty much the general arrangement of things. IMHO.

That's somewhat what I figured...so long as the conferences that would be most likely to pick up an FCS school don't overlook Lamar, all the other moving around only looks good if you're on the lower end of the totem pole.

1) How are we going to expand the stadium? MLK is on one side, trains/plant on the other, basketball arena on one end, fieldhouse on the other.

2) We can't fill up what we have.

I love your optimism. ;)

1. Don't know if we need it now, but at a minimum, there is room on the Dauphin Athletic Center / Scoreboard side for endzone seating as well as the "wings" on the Montagne Center side. That would get us between 20,000 and 25,0000. I'd prefer to deck the west side because I think endzone seats would be a harder sell, but agree that would be a very tight squeeze.

2. Might be a little more interest seeing DI FBS programs (or more DI FCS programs) play here instead of DII / NAIA.

I'm not happy with the attendance trend, but considering the record the last few years, attendance could have been a lot worse. We dropped to 42nd in FCS capacity at 69.49% and 3rd in the SLC this year behind Central Arkansas at 100.59% (which seats 7,500 less than we do) and SELA at 71.16% (which seats around 9,000 less than we do).

In average attendance we were 27th in FCS and 2nd in the SLC this year behind McNeese.

Interestingly enough, we were 19th in the FCS in total attendance and 1st in the SLC this year.

Jack@WACJack RT @NCAAsports: Sun Belt likely to expand over next 10 days w/ top candidate pool: Georgia Southern, Appalachian St, Jacksonville St, NMSU

Per Google Maps, Appalachian State's closest conference road trip would be 6 1/2 hours to WKU, GA Southern, and Ga State. It would expand the footprint to where Liberty University would be within 3 hours.

New Mexico State would be like Louisiana Tech was with the WAC ... out on an island, but it might be good for them since their alternative is independent or possibly the MAC.

Texas State is relatively isolated with this set up with closest football member, ULL, a six hour road trip. CUSA probably looks pretty good to them if they could make another move.

If ASU and NMSU get invites, it looks like the SLC will definitely be getting more spread out, but not much worse on the eastern side of the conference with FIU and FAU leaving.

To qualify for FBS LU would have to complete in 16 varsity sports, with a minimum of 6 for men and 8 for women. According to the LU website, they are at 15 sports with 7 men's sports and 8 sports for women. So, they would have to add one varsity sport. I assumed that womens softball and soccer were added recently in order to meet the 8 sport minimum for an eventual move up to FBS.

I believe track and field is considered two sports so they already meet that criteria. I think at this point Lamar doesn't have money and/or the desire to join the Sun Belt. I think with Dr. Simmons retiring they will want to wait until the new President comes aboard before making such a big decision.

As Coachacola mentioned, don't think number of sports is an issue for us. Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field count as separate sports. (Ref Section 20.9.4.3, page 343 of the 2012-2013 NCAA Division I manual).

That gives us 8 men's sports and 9 women's sports.

Here's a link to the site: http://www.ncaapublications.com/p-4284-2012-2013-ncaa-division-i-manual-available-for-order-now-for-delivery-after-aug-1.aspx

Didn't know it. Just curious and looked it up. :)
