KJ Dismissed from Football Team

BEAUMONT, Texas – Former Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, and 2014 Preseason All-America selection, Kevin Johnson, has been dismissed from the football team for a violation of team rules announced Lamar head coach Ray Woodard Thursday morning.

“We have certain guidelines for all of our athletes to follow,” said Woodard. “When those standards aren’t met, we have to take the appropriate disciplinary action. We wish Kevin all the best as he enters the next chapter in his life.”

A two-time All-Southland Conference return specialist, Johnson was named the league’s newcomer of the year in 2012 after transferring from Oklahoma State. He scored 13 touchdowns during his first season with Lamar as a receiver and return specialist. During his junior season, Johnson was moved to the defensive side of the ball where he worked his way into the starting lineup. The 2013 CFPA Punt Returner of the Year entered the season named to several preseason All-America squads. He recorded 25 tackles, including 14 solo stops in seven games this season.
