KJ Named Preseason All-American

Beaumont, Texas – Lamar senior return specialist Kevin Johnson has been named 2014 Beyond Sports Network (BSN) Preseason All-America announced BSN Chief Operating Officer Dan Evans Wednesday morning. Johnson is a second-team selection at punt returner.

“We are very happy to have Kevin back for one more season,” said head coach Ray Woodard. “He is such a talented individual. Kevin has the ability to change the scope of a game every time he steps on the field. He has had a positive impact for us in all three phases of the game and we are excited to see what he can do in his final year.”

Johnson proved his impact on the field last season contributing in all phases of the game. He hauled in six passes, including two for touchdowns, recorded two rushes, had 18 tackles at safety and tied for the team lead with two interceptions, was one of the nation’s best kick returners averaging 20 yards per return and finished second in the nation averaging 18 yards per punt return, including two scores. Due to Johnson’s efforts on the field, Lamar finished season ranked second nationally in punt return average.

A big-play threat every time he steps on the field, Johnson’s ability to change the momentum of a game was never more evident than at Grambling State. Trailing 16-0 in the second quarter, Johnson fielded a punt on his 48-yard line and returned it the distance. The touchdown switched the momentum of the game as the Cardinals rattled off 27 unanswered points for the victory.

Already 10th on the school’s all-time list for punt return yards, Johnson holds the LU record for punt returns for touchdowns in a season and career and is among the school’s all-time top 15 in scoring.

In addition to Johnson, junior receiver Reggie Begelton has also been named first-team BSN All-Southland Conference. In a league known for talented receivers, Begelton stamped his name at the top of that list in 2013. The Beaumont native led the Southland Conference with 82 receptions. He finished the year averaging 71.5 receiving yards per game while hauling in eight touchdown catches. A 2013 second-team All-SLC selection, Begelton set Lamar records for receptions in a game (18) and season.
