SLC All Conference Players Named

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University softball team placed four players on the Southland Conference’s all-conference team that was announced Monday.

Freshman outfielder Kendall Talley (San Antonio, Texas/East Central) was named to the first team, while junior second baseman Kelly Meeuwsen (Hillsboro, Oregon/Liberty), junior designated player Taylor Davis(Nederland, Texas/Nederland) and sophomore first baseman Shelby Henderson (Keller, Texas/Keller) were named to the second team.

Talley led the Cardinals with a .388 batting average in Southland Conference play. Overall, she batted .343 with one home run, 19 RBIs and a school-record seven triples. Talley led the Cardinals with 37 runs scored, including a team-best 21 runs in conference competition. Defensively, she had 100 outfield putouts to tie for the team lead, while her .982 fielding percentage led all LU outfielders.

Meeuwsen, a three-time all-conference selection, batted .328 this season, including a .372 mark against Southland Conference pitchers. She hit eight home runs to tie Henderson for the team lead. Her 32 RBIs were second on the team. Meeuwsen’s led LU with a .674 slugging percentage in SLC games. Defensively, Meeuwsen’s .976 fielding percentage was a single-season LU record for second basemen. The junior ended the season with 104 career RBIs, just three shy of the school record of 107 held by Ashley McDowell.

Davis, who finished her first season with the Cardinals after two seasons at Angelina College, batted .297 overall and .263 in conference play. Davis had one home run and was third on the team with 25 RBIs. She led the Cardinals with a .430 on-base percentage, setting an LU single-season record by drawing 35 bases on balls.

Henderson set a school record with 44 RBIs this season, while tying Meeuwsen for the team lead with eight home runs. Henderson batted .327 overall and .345 in conference play. She led the Cardinals with a .574 slugging percentage and was second with a .667 slugging percentage in conference games. Henderson led the Cards with 360 putouts and a .984 fielding percentage.

The Cardinals finished the season with a 28-28 overall record, including an 11-16 record in conference play.
