McNeese St. Coach Matt Viator

Featured Replies

Reports are surfacing that McNeese's Head Coach Matt Viator is going to named the new Head Coach for UL-Monroe as soon as today or tomorrow.
That would be good for him and I think he is deserving of the opportunity, but it could really be a bummer for McNeese. I really like the rivalry with McNeese but I really want it to be against a quality opponent.

Will be interesting to see what both Viator and McNeese does to fill out their staffs. Does Viator bring some of his assistants with him or start fresh at UL-M? Does McNeese try to hire from with again as they did with Viator if he doesn't take their replacement choice? What kind recruiting relationships would change?

Also saw where McNeese already has their replacement tabbed and will announce it later this week. Was said they wanted to give Viator the limelight he deserved. If they do indeed have a permanent replacement selected that would seem to be an in-house hire

Looks like Lance Guidry will be their next HC...has been the DC there for the last 3 seasons.
Hate to be negative Nelly but........ULM is a career killer. Worst job in FBS??

It's certainly not a destination job that's for sure. Think I saw where they have had 1 winning season in like 22 years and they just fired the guy who had that season. McNeese fans seem to think that Viator took the job strictly for more money and a better retirement and not necessarily for advancement in the coaching ranks. Numbers I've seen are he will go from a little under $150,000 a year incentives and all (sure thought he'd be making more than that) to around $350,000 a year on a 3 year deal.
Retirement pay in Louisiana is based on your best three years and number of years in system.Viator has about 30 years in Louisiana system so his retirement pay would more than double in three years. It is based on base state compensation and not add ons by foundations etc. Some Louisiana High School teachers and coaches come to Texas after retirement to teach or coach for similar reasons .About 80% of over double the salary for retirement is worth anyone's consideration.

Looks like Viator's staff will have a heavy SLC feel. He brought 4 McNeese assistants with him including their OC. He also got SFA's OC so I would assume the would be Co-OCs. Now it's being reported that SHSU's DC will join the ULM staff as well
I don't understand. McNeese had a great defense and okay offense while SHSU had a great offense and okay defense so he brings the mcNeese OC with him and hires the SHSU DC? Did he get their phone numbers mixed up?

Familiarity is my guess. Mike Collins was the DC at McNeese before he went to SHSU for the last 3 seasons so there is history there. My guess would be that the McNeese DC was Viator's first choice but since he was offered the HC position, Viator had to scratch him off his list.
