The Lamar University Cardinals are in the unenviable task of trying to fight their way into the Southland Conference tournament in the final six games of the 2015-16 regular season. After a seven-game slide Big Red finds itself in 13th place in the SLC standings a game back of Nicholls – a team LU holds the tiebreaker on. The Cardinals (10-14/2-10 SLC) will look to take their first step in the climb back up the conference ladder Monday when it travels to Houston to take on Houston Baptist. The Huskies are 14-11 (.560) on the season and tied for fourth in the league standings with an 8-4 (.667) conference record.

Looking at what's left for LU if the Cards want to make the tourney they have to win this game tonight. Of the six games the Cards have left four of them are against the top four teams in the conference, including at fourth place HBU tonight. Based on performance to date the only two probable chances for wins are the two games against McNeese and again based on past history a win at Lake Chuck is unlikely. Most likely the Cards will be sitting at home again this year when the conference tourney starts. Very disappointing. Maybe they can pull off a miracle.

Cards in deep trouble early, after a little early success taking a 6-3 lead Lamar has given up 15 straight to HBU to go down by twelve with twelve minutes left in the first half. Garth is at home in Beaumont sick. Edited by geezer

HBU wins by one after finally missing two free throws in a row with 8 seconds on left in the game. Lamar turns the ball over bringing the ball up the court for a chance to win the game. With a two and eleven record in conference Lamar is most likely out of SLC tourney as realistically about the best they can do is to win two of the last five and the teams immediately ahead of them have easier opponents to finish the season.
