eagle eye
I find it a little hard to believe that a college sports forum doesn't have a thread about one of the most influential coaches of the last 50 years. Pat Summit put women's basketball on the map. We all need appreciate what she accomplished as a coach and also as a person whom her players universally loved. She was hard on her players, in many ways she was harder than today's coaches may be allowed to be, but she did it because she wanted to bring out the full potential of the players she was coaching. She was tough but it was a toughness borne of love for her players and her players loved her. Sometimes after they graduated and moved on but they all loved her for what she meant to them as a basketball coach and for the life lessons she taught them along the way. Pat Summit was a great coach and nothing illustrates that more than this article from NFL.com about Peyton Manning's reaction to her death. Manning was from the University of Tennessee as was Summit and their friendship when beyond each other's sports arenas. I hope our coaches at Lamar, men's and women's alike, are all as good at coaching and as people as Pat Summit was. It speaks volumes to her influence in the sports world that there is an article about her passing on pro football website. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000671612/article/peyton-i-consulted-with-pat-summitt-on-staying-at-tennessee
