Lamar finds success in FBS-to-FCS transfers

Jalen Barnes traded his scarlet Texas Tech jersey for a different hue this offseason.

Cameron Hampton did the same a season ago, in his case ditching the distinctive burnt orange of Texas.

Both players made the decision to leave their in-state Football Bowl Subdivision schools for Lamar, a Football Championship Subdivision school, for the same reason - they wanted larger roles.

It's a recurring theme with FBS-to-FCS transfers - and it doesn't always work out.

Lamar, however, has found success in similar cases. Coach Ray Woodard thinks Barnes and Hampton will be the latest to flourish in Beaumont.

Looked at 2017 NFL CBS draft prospect rankings. Herrington is ranked 21 for running backs. Langley is ranked 22 for DB's. Treadway is ranked 31 for offense guards. Just noticed he has the highest ranking from the state of Texas . That's pretty impressive for Lamar players.

Herrington up to 20, Langley up to 19; Treadway up to 30.

Give a lot of credit to Rodney Randle on that play too...notice he moved the WR outside cutting off the sideline and forcing the play inside of him where there was help...then once the play went that direction he was in good position to come off the block and help make a play...Barnes made the hit but the fumble doesn't happen without Randle in that position to sandwich the receiver.

Cards Finish Morning Scrimmage

It is apparent that Mother Nature is not happy with the preseason practice schedule for the Lamar University football team, and she is making the Cardinals pay a heavy price. The Cardinals had four practices altered or shortened this week due to lightning in the area, changes that also forced head coach Ray Woodard to change the start time for the team's first scrimmage. Saturday morning Woodard was forced to change the scrimmage schedule for the second time in less than 24 hours as the Cardinals hit the field at 11 a.m. Saturday (the scrimmage was originally changed to a 6 p.m. start Saturday evening).

"I don't really think the changes to the schedule have hurt the guys," said Woodard. "Other than Monday, we've been able to get on the field but it hasn't been at the times we've scheduled."

Australian punter is Lamar football's first international player

Mitchell Gray hasn't played a down of American football, yet he already has made a difference at Lamar.

Gray, from Brisbane, Australia, is the team's first international player since the program returned in 2010.

He also is the first rugby-style punter in coach Ray Woodard's 28-year career, a nod to the growing popularity of rugby-style punters.

"I've wanted a rugby-style punter ever since I coached in Europe," Woodard said. "Mitchell was a guy who really stood out on tape he sent us and it ended up being a great fit."

Lamar's Miles patient as return to field nears

Tuesday was supposed to be a milestone day for Manasseh Miles.

The redshirt junior defensive end was set to go through his first practice in pads in almost a year, finally healthy after a gruesome injury on an illegal block cost him his first season at Lamar.

Tuesday was supposed to be a milestone day for Manasseh Miles.

The redshirt junior defensive end was set to go through his first practice in pads in almost a year, finally healthy after a gruesome injury on an illegal block cost him his first season at Lamar.

Then lightning rolled in - and practice was canceled.

Miles, on the verge of the last stage of his rehabilitation, quickly came to peace with the delay - it's what he's learned to do since the injury.

"I can't believe the weather is like this on my first day back," Miles said. "It's ridiculous, but honestly I'm just glad to be out here again."

Begelton, Brock transition from players to coaches at Lamar

Reggie Begelton and Justin Brock weren't fans of football practices, yet they haven't been able to stay away from them after finishing up their playing days at Lamar.

Begelton and Brock, seniors on last year's team, are continuing with the program as graduate assistants.

The pair, both West Brook graduates, are enjoying the player-to-coach transition.

"I hated practices and don't miss participating in them at all," Begelton said. "Coaching is a little different, though, and I like it."

Neither Begelton nor Brock plans to coach professionally, but the opportunity has kept them around their old teammates and mentors.

Thanks for videos. I can't believe the Cards have been able to practice at all outside with the crap weather we've been having. I like Ray's assessment of how the defense has improved and how hard the DC has made the guys work. It's stuff like that make for good results. Can't wait for the first game.
