November 26, 20178 yr Author Former Silsbee HS QB Dontre Thomas has indicated he will walk-on the the Lamar football team for next season. Thomas graduated HS in 2016 and played at Kilgore JC where he only appeared in one game that fall but was out of football this season. He should be a RS-Sophomore next season. He put up some gaudy numbers his senior season at Silsbee as he lead them to the state quartfinals going 11-3 and averaging 48 points per game. Individually, Thomas rushed the ball 250 times for 1880 yards and 31 TDs. Comes out to 7.5 yards per carry and a game average of 18 carries for 134 yards and 2 TDs. Through the air Thomas was 176 of 302 (58%) for 3146 yards and 40 TDs. Per game averaged 13 of 22 for 225 yards and 3 TDs.

December 19, 20178 yr Author Tomorrow is an important day in the recruiting calendar in multiple ways. The biggest thing in terms of national recruiting news is that it is the first early signing period for HS seniors since the new rule was put into place. Really this rule only has an effect on FBS schools due to the nature of recruiting. The early signing period will allow kids to go ahead and sign vs waiting until the traditional signing period which opens on the first Wednesday of Feb. I personally think there will be theee types of players who sign early. You’ll have your guys who have been long committed to schools and are ready to get the recruiting process over and not have to hear from other schools anymore. Then you’ll have your guys who plan to enroll early (previously they just basically enrolled and didn’t get to have a traditional signing ceremony). And lastly you’ll have your guys who a wanting to secure their spot and not get “trap-doored” because as anyone who follows recruiting will tell you it can be a dirty business. This new HS signing period will probably see very minimal action at the FCS level due to kids waiting to see if a better offer comes in later. I’m sure FCS coaches do their best to persuade their commits to sign early to prevent poaching as the Feb. signing day approaches. More importantly for FCS schools is tomorrow is also the opening of the mid year transfer signing period. At the moment we have 5 known guys who are set to transfer in but I’m not positive how many of those are mid year guys. I have seen where Army transfer Hunter Adams is set to sign early but not positive on the others. With the amount of JUCO recruiting Lamar has done of late, I would not be surprised to see a handful sign with some that we don’t know about at this time. There is a press conference set for 11 AM tomorrow for the announcement of the signees but I’m sure info will be posted prior to that.
