Carlos Correa’s Brother commits to Lamar

JC Correa, the younger brother of Astros star SS Carlos Correa has committed to LU. He did this before the Astros took him with the 33rd pick in the MLB draft. Correa has played the past 2 seasons at Alvin Community College and given the upheaval at Lamar over the controversy involving the softball program, the change at AD and the poor season the LU men had I think it is a coin toss as to whether he actually comes to Lamar. I would love to see the young man in LU red and white so I have my fingers crossed. The Astros have signed 26 of their first 31 picks but the final 9 picks (#32-40) remain unsigned. This includes Correa, Alex Bregman’s little brother AJ (pick 35) and the grandson of Astros legend Jose Cruz, Antonio (pick 37). Bregman is committed to the Univ of New Mexico.

I doubt he gives a hoot about the softball program or the AD. And the baseball team was in the midst of season of crapola when he signed. Some cash might sway him, but i dont know what a 33rd rounder gets these days.

"I spent a lot of time with him in the winter break. We would practice together," Correa said. "In the spring season, we would see each other on the weekend or I would go to Astros games. It's a big reason why I picked Lamar."

He went 1002 overall. There is very little money at that level. If he doesn't come I think it will be because he wants to be in the same organization (possibly MLB team) as his brother.

I mentioned his commitment a few weeks ago when he made it and at the time he had said he was looking to do to a D-1 school to improve his draft stock. A lot of clubs use the 30th rounds to take guys as more ceremonial or to take a shot in the dark on a guy that has a strong college commitment to see if they can find some extra cash to sign them. The way the MLB draft is set up, there is a pool of money assigned to each team based on their picks in the top 10 rounds. Anything over $125,000 to a pick after the 10th round counts back to that pool. Failing to sign a player that is a top 10 rounder means you lose the money assigned to the slot of that draft pick, where as failing to sign someone in rounds 11-40 is no penalty. So essentially you can either make a pick to create buzz or make a pick on someone who odds are won’t even make it to the more advanced levels of your farm system. When they selected the younger Bregman, he was actually at MMP watching Alex take BP...Alex was actually they one who walked over and told his younger brother that the Astros had drafted him...that had to be a cool moment for the family. Speaking of Bregman, Lamar now has a connection to both guys on the left side of Houston’s infield. Bregman played at LSU when Davis was an assistant there and now Correa. There was even a picture of Bregman last year wearing a Lamar shirt at Vincent Beck.
