    • Alvin Brooks III - Alvin's boy can do it!
    • Kellen Sampson - He'll return to UH in a few years, he'll be the new Pat Foster

What keeps a coach from transferring all his players- the fact they're still mostly try to get a degree and could lose over a semester of credits (if not more) by transferring.

Then again, at Texas, those guys will probably stick around since it sounds like they're just waiting for the weekend for Chris Beard's buyout to drop.

Just wondering since while watching the NCAA Tournament, the announcers mentioned a Texas Southern player had played at 4 different schools in 5 years and could play somewhere else next year. I know the NCAA has suspended the waiver requirement for last year and this year due to COVID. In the SLC I believe you have to sit out 1 year if you transfer within conference. Some conferences have waived that rule also, I think it may have been the Big10 & SEC.

Galen Alexander started at LSU, transferred to Jones County JC, then to Georgetown (transferred to TSU in Jan 2000, forcing him to wait until Jan 2021 to play).

Since we've talked about the D2 route, would we prefer Tom Brown or Ben McCollum.

Brown:

Overall: 530-179 (0.749)

at WTAMU: 181-43 (0.808); Conference: 92-25 (0.786)

Last 5 Years: 143-21 (0.872), Conference: 75-13 (0.852)

McCollum:

Overall (all at NW Missouri St): 300-78 (0.794), Conference: 183-55 (0.769)

Last 5 Years: 159-8 (0.952), Conference: 92-6 (0.939)

2017, 2019, 2021 National Champs at NW Missouri State (so 3 of 4)

Interesting question!

I kind of like Brown since he recruits more Texas players, but he has a bigger and better staff.

McCollum recruits mostly out of the Midwest part of the country and seems to have less as far as help. McCollum teams seem to play really good defense.

Interesting point is neither coach has a guard under 5 feet, 10 inches (NWMS has none under 6 feet). Similar to the teams in the NCAA Sweet 16. Also both are successful in their 5 year records which shows you they did not do it based on one superstar player.

I would take either one! Both have teams that would handily beat Lamar. Interesting they do not play many non-conference games outside of their division (D2). Would expect to see more D1 schools on their schedules.

I guess my pick would come down to the interview.

I would lean towards Brown. (And dont be delusional, Lamar would rout a D2 school.)

Rout NWMS? What do you consider a rout? Cards only had 1 win of over 20 points this year (UIW on the road - 21 point win). D2 has 3 less scholarships available (10) for men basketball than D1. That is what Lamar dressed most of the time and we rotated typically 7-8.

Also thought it was interesting that NWMS has 12 teams in their conference. Played 22 conference games.

I agree if Lamar goes with a D2 coach, I like Brown. I don't think this years Lamar team would have routed West Texas A&M.

I guess no news today out of Lamar about a new basketball coach.

That is what I was thinking. I am surprised there has not been anything leaked about the coach selected. The longer there is no news the more I think the coach may be from one of the teams still playing.

You hit on exactly why I did 5 years- obviously they're not coaching 1-n-done players, but there is so much player movement these days that you almost don't even know all the players until mid-season.

5 years throws out a lot of variables.

I think you're dead right- if they're both willing to take the interview, I think a school can't go wrong. They know how to win.

The Harold Mann interview had Marco saying a coach with head coaching experience, which kinda leads to Alvin Brooks, and will not be announced until U of H season is over. Why else wait?

What does others think???

If we do not hear anything by Thursday, I would think that is the case. It would be great if Alvin brought Alvin III with him!

always liked him, but he has a crappy record as head coach

That is probably good enough for Lamar.

Alvin Brooks was pretty young (34) when he got the UH job. I think he deserves another head coaching job. It is always a crap shoot hiring any coach. Danny Kasper, who put SFA on the map, is just a little above .500 in overall games and under .500 in conference games in 7 years at Texas State. They probably thought he was a sure thing.

If, for example, it's the WTAMU coach, wasn't their title game over the weekend?

Let's look at logistics.

- The D2 title game was Saturday.

- Fulfill commitments there (game, press conference, team dinner, fly home)

- They returned home on Sunday

- Sit down with the family and make sure the change is wanted on Sunday. Potentially let Born know that day.

- Monday Morning, let the assistants know. After lunch (and classes are over), let the team know.

- Press conference in Beaumont AT THE EARLIEST today.

If it's Brooks (Jr. or III) or even Kellen Sampson, the press conference would be, at the earliest today. I wouldn't be comfortable with a coach who thought it was good idea to do that Zoom the day of an Elite Eight game.

I am hearing that Kellen Sampson is waiting to find out if his dad is getting the OU job. That could also be a wrench in going after any UH staffers- that they don't know if their boss is moving back to Norman.

Have not heard the Kelvin Sampson to Oklahoma move. He was head coach there about 20 years ago, but left for Indiana amid a recruiting scandal that Sampson was a part of. At Indiana he was fired due to same violations and banned from the NCAA for 5 years. Not sure Sooners have forgiving him.

But time may heal everything.

His violations are all now permissible by the NCAA. I think Oklahoma would welcome him back.

Doesn't the state mandate a 10 day period for a state job to be open. If that's the case, the job was posted on the 22nd of March. So, that would make the first date a coach could be announced being April 1.

Technically. I'd rather wait and hire the right person. Hopefully, we'll get some insight (even a "78 people applied for the job.")

Agree, and there are still a lot of good candidates out there. Would still be interesting to know the level of interest.

With the Austin Peay, Texas-Austin, and Oklahoma jobs still open, the coaching carousel is still turning.

I think the Allen HS football hire proves- think outside the box and you might strike gold.

If a Baylor or U of H coach is hired, strike now while the iron is hot... get Jim Nantz mentioning it during the game (with a lower-third of his name and "New Lamar Basketball Coach" under video of him coaching the kids up.

More important than the exposure... get a guy who will win!!! GCU, ACU, and SFA are getting into living rooms that we're not because they're winning already.

I have a feeing Billy-G is getting into living rooms we're not because of winning at UTEP and A&M (even if the kids don't remember those seasons- it's still NCAA wins).

I think it is going to be Alvin Brooks and it will be announced after UH loses.
