I was hoping maybe they would pick Lamar over UTA.
coastalman
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/brett-mcmurphy/ 18911274 Looks as if WAC is near death.... Pretty smart move getting out before the you know what hit the fan. lv
coachacola
Here's what the Sun Belt will look like next year: http://appstatenation.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/sunbelt1.png If they want to go to the 14/12 model with east/west divisions, they just need to add Lamar in the west and a school like Georgia Southern in the east. Guest NorthoftheBorder
It is done, over and finished. Lamar has absolutely no chance of FBS at this point. It is a major market issue. UTA and TxSt were selected because they are in major media markets. That is the number one driving issue. The only way LU could have had a chance would have been they would have had to have a very strong and long history of FCS football success and would have to have already been a strong mid major basketball power along the lines of a Gonzaga, and even that would still probably not been enough to overcome the market issue. La Tech and UL-Monroe, already FBS but even a smaller market and UL-Lafayette who is in an equivalent media market at BMT are already FBS so they are secure. Guest CardAmbassador
For now lets just be happy where we're at. Things are looking slightly up, I especially like where the basketball team is headed.
lu cards
looking at that map lamar would be a perfect fit for the sunbelt.lamar will make the move at some point its just may take a little longer.
Who Dat
I still think that if this was happening five years into the future instead of now we'd be talked about and getting an invite somewhere. Theres just too much going on financially here right now for simmons to make a push thats needed.
coachacola
From what I've been reading Georgia Southern wants in but they won't be ready for a few years. I think the Sun Belt will add two more football schools in a year or two. Lamar and Georgia State would compliment each other, and both need a little time to prepare. I think there are several factors in Lamar's favor but I'm guessing it's still a long shot that Lamar gets an invite. But I think the CUSA is probably still very unstable so movement there in the future will open up more opportunities somewhere for Lamar. Doubt it Small town thinkers and this type of attitude is what will always keep Lamar and Southeast texas down. Its a fact that Simmons and lamar were somewhat interested in the WAC expansion last go around. Luckily he didnt push for it because look whats happened to that conference and UTA for example. if we had gone we may be left out in the cold but the point is if you think that if all this was going on 5 years into the future and Lamar had its fiances in order that they wouldn't be pushing harder for it I think youre mistaken. I think Simmons is a very smart man that has been GREAT for Lamar and hes a big thinker. Hes just doing his business the smart way without prematurely jumping into soemthing. I really admire Simmons for sticking with Lamar through the thick and the thin, when he took office in 1999 that job had to be a headache. Lamar's finances were in the pits and we had been audited several times because many of our leaders in the 90's were corrupt or incompetent. He has done a good job to fix that mess and push us forward again.

The biggest problem there is that too many fans want to used the football team as a local factory for passed over talent in SETX.
Guest McneeseKilla
Agreed CA. That's what junior colleges are for, and then if they're good enough to comeback and play here then bring em back. Go out and get the best high school players you can find from all over the state not just the average SE teaxas guys.

coachacola
Now for the ridiculous, how about Idaho, NMSU, LU, SHSU and SFA to the Sun Belt? :D Link: http://www.presnapread.com/idaho-n-m-s-u-hope-sun-belt-expands-west/
Big T
I think that it could work. However i'm not to sure about Liberty. Personaly I like it just where we are for right now. The SLC is looking up with the additions of Oral Roberts and the probable addition of New Orleans. HBU was a step in the wrong direction But the other moves have improved the SLC. I just don't think we are ready to jump up to the FBS level.

The 16 team scenario does allow for a buffer of schools in case of another raid. I would be 100% for it and would like to eat my words of a few hours ago that FBS is completely dead for LU. jdcurran235
WAC officials said Monday in a statement "[The Board of Directors] continues to evaluate the impact upon the WAC and is closely engaged in evaluating its membership options." Interim commissioner Jeff Hurd said he was confident the WAC "would maintain its more than 50-year history as a preeminent Division I conference." I am still not sure the WAC is RIP as a football conference. Not sure if anyone is willing to move up to save them but with the new rules the WAC and SBC are the only way into the FBS ranks. The bowls talked about needing more teams so they dont have all the 6-4 teams in bowl games. With the rule changes the WAC might stil survive even as a football conference. I am not making a prediction of what will happen to the WAC. In fact I am making a non prediction. I am not sure what will happen cause nothing has been predicatable so far. They drink some serious koolaid at SFA and SHSU, I remember them telling me that the SLC was "the better conference" in comparison to the Sun Belt. The Sun Belt is one of the bottom FBS conferences but the SLC doesn't even compare. Again, the top of the SLC is nice, (SHSU,SFA,McNeese) but the bottom makes it very unappealing. Especially with the addition of HBU.
