I don't know any more of the details than you guys do, but he had a rough life coming up in school. He was detailed on an MTV special and he seemed like a great guy.

Once he got to campus, he came across as a little bit pouty because we were going to redshirt him last year. He worked hard during the season and started playing towards the end and appeared to be a phenomenal athlete. Hope it works out and he learns from his mistakes.

Thanks for posting that link to the MTV video, I hadn't seen it. He really comes across as a great kid that has been through an awful lot growing up. It seems he has a good head on his shoulders. Sounds like he just made a bad error in judgement. Hopefully that's all it is "an error in judgement". If he does come to Lamar, we should welcome him with open arms. If he just flat out tried to steal money from this other kid, then no I don't want him. But I have a feeling it was a misunderstanding between the two kids.

Take him! But Only if he wins his case or gets probation.

They'll probably reduce the charges down in exchange for him repaying the money and doing some community service and/or probation. He won't get convicted of felonies and will get a second chance at Lamar.

I'll take that trade of Washington to Navarro and Sims here any day of the week and twice on Sunday. I hope he is able to put his personal issues behind him and have a new beginning at Lamar. Those that know me, know I've been given 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances. I believe through love this kid can turn his life around...Welcome to SE Texas, Beaumont, the Golden Triangle and to Lamar University Mr. Sims!!!

This looks like a done deal. Has anyone heard anything official?

http://www.rantsports.com/lacesout/2012/07/08/college-football-recruiting-herschel-sims-lands-at-lamar/

I asked sources around the football program and they stated that this report was premature, that its not a done deal but "it could happen."

Saying "it could happen" concerning Sims is the first time anyone around the program has acknowledged that he was even a possibility. So when/if we find out more we'll post it.

Stay tuned.....

is this a serious post? who are the druggies? and oh yea lets nail sims to the cross and never allow him to play football again from our glass houses. oden was given a 2nd chance (really a 3rd) here and he had no incidents off the field. i read from the other articles in the post above that sims is saying it was a misunderstanding. others that know him say hes a good kid and im sure the other two oklahoma state kids had a say in his character before we approached him. we arent going to land the #2 running back in the state and a top 100 player in the nation out of high school with 3 years eligibility that often here so lets see how it goes and if he gets in trouble hes gone. its low risk for high reward in my opinion.

I myself am not particularly thrilled about this either, but lets be clear. If Sims signs with Lamar this will be the third recruit in 3 years we've had that was in some type of trouble, that's not a particularly high number. Dorsey especially has been very quiet since he got here and has also contributed to the team the last two seasons.

I understand second chances sometimes, but not everytime, and it doesn't always need to be us that gives guys like Sims a second chance, there are other teams these guys can go to.

I worry about what this does to the guys in the locker room who have never been in any trouble, what message do they get sent? If you're good enough you can get a second chance but a guy who is just a walk on isn't going to have a chance in hell at getting on the team if he has some sort of prior problem. That might make them give up, it might make them stop trying as hard.

Football like all sports is just as much about the mental aspect as it is about the physical. What was the problem Knight was having with Roc's basketball recruits? They weren't being responsible. Obviously Sims is a good player, but we also need to be a little more cognizant of how Sims presence on the team will affect his teammates attitudes towards the coaching staff and the other team mates.

Production and winning seems to forgive all. Give the kid a chance and a short leash. This is a huge pick up for LU. As long as everyone can stay out of cuffs we just might win a few more games this season!

This post is a little over the top. First off, who are the druggies? I know several of the players on the football roster and most of them are great people. There are some who do smoke a little pot at parties and plenty who drink, but who doesn't as a college student? We don't know the entire story here and we may never know the entire story. I'm not saying this kid is inoccent and was firmly in the camp of we don't need his problems here at Lamar. But now with the news being that he will most likley become a Lamar Cardinal, i'm willing to see if he can turn it around and become a very good player for our Cards. Rember, these are just 18-22 year old kids who do very dumb things and have to learn the hard way. Trust me, as one of those kids right now I do some really dumb things that I wish I had never done. Hopefully he has learned and will become a very productive peice on this Lamar team and in society.

It seems to me Big T you answered your on!! If this is happening on this team then they will have a hard time winning. You can have your type of players and I will take mine. My next question is anyone on the team dealing? Just wondering not condemning. Why have a recruiting budget if we can get someone elses problems. Oden did have problems just not in the season. OSU had to know something or they would not have got rid of this player believe it or not. We will see how this plays out hopefully for the best.

I'm sure what Herschel Sims has been going through the past few weeks is a good wake up call. From what I have read, this is his first offense. Just about everyone at some point in their life has committed an offense, the difference is some have been caught and some have not. I am in no way condoning this activity (stealing from friend or teammate is about the worst in my book) but he should not be sentenced for life. If this was an habitual issue for Sims, I wouldn't open the door for him but its not. Give the kid a chance to redeem himself and I believe we should feel lucky to have him.

The suggestion that Lamar's recruiting is inmoral is surely way over the top.

I was originally in the camp that didn't want him. However, a chief complaint over the last few seasons was from a perception that our coaches were missing out on recruiting key talent. Now the he is coming, let's give the coaches the benefit of the doubt. I can't wait to see this guy perform!

If OSU is Okie Lite, are we now Okie Super Lite? :)

I apologize that my spell checker automatically changes some spellings making them incorrect, but The drug thing is a touchy subject in college football. I tend to vent and I apologize for that.
