BigRed98
I don't know much of any of these schools. I'm wondering what those of you that stay informed have to say about them, particularly in the areas of football men's bb, and baseball. Guest CardAmbassador
UNO doesn't have football but I think they would add the most recognition to the league. I'm not crazy about the other two but they do have football.
puddin tane
We played Incarnate Word ---i think i saw em on a list as one of the fastest growing universities. ex LU coach Keenan is their head coach....they've been pumping alot of money into football...New orleans Saints owner is a major donor. Guest LU 17
Wow, I cant believe coach K is at Incarnate word, he was throwing the ball around 60 times at LU when it wasn't cool to throw that much. That was a good pick up for them.
AceHigh
Not sure I read that right. What year would that make Abilene Christian And Incarnate Word eligible to come aboard?
Big T
If they were to be invited to join the SLC today they would be eligible to join in the fall of 2016. It would take four years for them to become ready.
AceHigh
Thanks BIG T, that's what I thought. Abilene Christian is, and has been for a while, a seriously strong D-II team. A lot stronger than the upstart Incarnate Word. Also, AC's track team is always excellent. NFL trivia - The Houston Texan's Safety Danieal Manning is out of Abilene Christian, as well as WR Johnny Knox of the Bears, RB Bernard Scott of the Bengals, and KR Clyde Gates of the Dolphins. Mr.KnowItAll
I remember ACU beating Texas State a few years back in San Marcos. It wasn't an upset. They appeared to have every bit the talent TX St. Had.
LUSportsFan
We have a history with two of the candidates. ACU was a charter Southland Conference member along with us. UNO was with us in the American South Conference and then our years in the Sun Belt Conference. IWU is in San Antonio, one of the top ten cities in the US. Looks like they have pretty good backing with Tom Benson. As mentioned above, they have a tie to us also with one of our most successful coaches. Marketing our program and "butts in the stands" picked up exponentially when Coach Kennan was here. It dropped back to the old ways when he left. If IWU can have a bit of that magic, they will be a good add.

They're in New Orleans and schools like Lamar have a history with them, but in the long run I'm not sure Incarnate Word isn't the better choice. They're in San Antonio (id go to SA to watch the Cards) they've got a strong backing from Benson who wants them to succeed and the biggest plus for me is they have football. BigRed98
Is there any talk on how many the SLC will accept? None of them seem like bad adds from what y'all are saying.
coachacola
San Antonio Express blog post suggests the SLC may invite all three schools: New Orleans, Incarnate Ward and Abilene Christian: I continue to get the feeling that the Southland Conference will extend invitations to all three schools seeking membership this summer. That means that by the end of August, we could see the SLC add San Antonio-based Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian, both from the Division II Lone Star Conference, and also the University of New Orleans, a Division I independent. The SLC has already visited New Orleans and Incarnate Word and will continue its summer tour with a trip to Abilene July 31-Aug. 1. From there, the SLC site committee will report its findings to 10 university presidents who will vote on the issue. A decision is due by the end of the summer. The reason they may do this is the commissioner is afraid the SLC may lose more schools in the future: SLC commissioner Tom Burnett said in San Antonio on Friday that part of the reason for a potential move to 14 stems from the volatility of the conference landscape in college sports. "What if you lose two more?" Burnett said, talking hypothetically. "What if you lost three? "Are we trying to get ahead of things? So, if that happened, could we settle on a comfortable number? We'll have to wait and see on that." In another comment, Burnett suggested that it might be best to prepare for another round of change. Redrain07
I think ACU and UIW would be great fits in division 1. Throw UNO in the mix and the SLC now has two major cities within the conference. I think Tarleton deserves a look.
Big T
I agree. I think Tarleton deserves a look. However looking at their athletic facilities, they would have to do some major upgradeing. Every facility would hve to be expanded, and they would probably have to build an entire new basketball facility. http://www.tarletonsports.com/sports/2009/8/27/Ath_facilities.aspx?tab=facilities
Guest BigRed2010
I don't think Tarleton State is what the Southland Conference is looking for right now. They are looking at universities in larger cities (New Orleans,Tulsa,San Antonio,Houston) than Stephenville and yes Big T, most all their athletic facilities would need a upgrade. Also, they must get all their money and financing from Texas A&M. They have $0 dollars listed for their endowment. I really don't see them joining the SLC, anytime soon. Redrain07
You're right the fact their endowment is so low would be reasons for concern but I'd hate to see something happen to the conference long term that would leave us in a world of hurt. Redrain07
I hope so but I would hate to lose the rivalries within the SLC.
Guest BigRed2010
Redrain07, Which rivalaries would you hate to lose? I'm probably much older than you and have seen this conference thru the years, believe me there's no university to be afraid of losing a rivalry with. I've seen rivalries, and the one's in this conference aren't sh*t. These guys from SHSU and SFA have no idea what a rivalry is. Lamar and McNeese, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State, Southern Mississippi used to have a rivalry a few years back in the 80's, but this conference isn't close to what it used to be. The sooner we get to the Sun Belt, the better. If they will have us again......
Redrain07
Well I attended for SFA for a semester and I'm from the area so I have quite a few friends that attend school there. So I guess that one hits home for me. What do you think about adding Hardin University to the conference or maybe some other D-2 schools from OK and AR. AceHigh
As far as other D-II schools, West Texas A & M has a big stadium (they were D-I back in the day), they have a good team normally, and their attendance is always better than most other D-IIs out there. I'd go with them before others out of state. Still, I like Incarnate Word's upside for reasons already mentioned on this thread, and Abilene Christian is always strong in multiple sports, not just football. coachacola
The SLC already sucks as a basketball conference. Adding HBU is Incarnate Word is going to make it worse. Now we're talking about these other D2 schools? I find that depressing.
Redrain07
Hey if the conference is weak and we win some more conference tourneys I can live with that. Well the only reason I said anything about some D-2 schools is because I was assuming football was a must.
