2012 roster

I counted 89 players on the current roster listed on the Athletic website. That means a lot of competition in the fall camp. Should produce a good team this year. We now have a lot more size and depth on the DL and at LB on defense so this bodes really well for the defense. If the line can get consistent pressure on the QB then that helps the DB's a lot. And if the front 7 can plug the running gaps, then this could be the beginning of a strong football program.

Also, the 2012 Football prospectus is now on the site.

Bailey isn't going to back because of grades I believe. Going to be very inexperienced on the line.

That's very disappointing. Here's the 2-deep according to the prospectus:

Left Tackle

77 Justin Brock 6-4 255 Fr.-RS

75 Taylor Davis 6-3 300 Sr.-1L

Left Guard

72 Brock Wempa 6-2 310 Jr.-TR

73 Scott Utterback 6-1 285 Fr.-RS

Center

64 Kyle Gillam 6-1 260 Jr.-2L

65 Ryan Jones 6-4 260 Sr.-1L

Right Guard

50 Sean Robertson 6-1 275 Sr.-1L

73 Scott Utterback 6-1 285 Fr.-RS

Right Tackle

70 Stephen Babin 6-4 280 Jr.-2L

61 Colton Collins 6-3 310 Sr.-1L

Projected starters:

Babin started 8 games as a freshman in 2010 but only played in 5 games as a backup last year.

Robertson started 8 games last year.

Gillam of course is the mainstay of the OL.

310 lb Wempa needs to step in and contribute right away.

Brock is the redshirt freshman from Beaumont West Brook. I heard he's quick and athletic but needs to add more weight.

Other returnees:

Davis is the transfer from Missouri. Was highly ranked out of HS. Maybe he'll be a big contributor this year.

Collins didn't play much last year.

Bunch of young players after these guys. Hope McKnight can work some magic.

If I'm that big tight end, Cory Soto...I'd be hiding if the O-line coach is close by

I'm thinking the same thing puddin'

I doubt this kid (a jc transfer) is coming from California to play on the offensive line. If I'm him, I'm balking big time. I don't see this happening. If he was a freshman, maybe.

What does that even mean? OL is just as important as TE, in fact it is more Important IMO.

I know what you are saying, CA. However, I think Soto will be a valuable part of the team at TE. Imagine having him as an eligible receiver with guys that are 6'2" (6 inches shorter and skinnier) trying to tackle him.

I agree offensive line is more important than TE but this kid has been playing TE for two years at a junior college. I doubt he wants to move to the offensive line now. I think we recruited him as a TE and that's where we will see him play. If he was a freshman and 6'8" 255lbs coming in, then he has a couple of years to put on some more weight. His potential right now is at TE in my opinion.

I agree, plus on running plays I bet he'll be doing a lot of blocking for the running backs.

I did notice that senior offensive lineman Kameron Edwards redshirted last year after playing in 2010. Does anyone know why he redshirted last year?

He may not move, but changing positions is not uncommon. Here's a link of Nebraska players who will possibly play in a new position this year. Most of them are upper classmen (juniors and seniors). One player, Justin Jackson, moved from Center to Defensive Tackle, and now possibly back to Center. I would prefer a player who is flexible enough to be willing to make a position change if that's what is needed for the good of the team.

I agree with what you are saying, if the kids are suited to changing positions. Cory Soto is 6'8" and 255lbs. To me, his size and weight says TE not offensive lineman. Maybe, a defensive end. If he had a couple of more years to put on another 35 to 45 lbs then, yes he could make the transition. He's already a junior, after next year he will be gone. I just don't think we will see him on the o-line.
