I was at practice tonight from 6:30 to 7:45. We look like we have some size on both sides of the ball. Lots of running backs so we should be much better. Did not notice Mike Venson out there and there were a few others that I am not sure where there either as not everyone is wearing their game number right number. Was about to walk over to where Mike was when I got a call and had to leave.

Who was the lineman 71? He looks big? Last night was my first night going to practice but he doesnt look familiar. He is a good size though. Big legs. He is not sloppy with the footwork rather very good at it and faster than Ryan as center but who is he? His snaps need work. Maybe just nervous. Of course Kyle looks awesome!

Venson was there, he was wearing #17 in white.

I didn't get close enough to the OL drills to know who it was and their practice jersey numbers aren't accurate. I'll try to find out and answer.

Couple quick thoughts on last nights (8/7) practice:

1. One of the first things I heard was "you play like you practice," emphasizing the importance of not suiting out sloppy and not going half-a**. Based on the first practice I saw the team practiced hard the entire 2-hours. It's early but they showed a lot of enthusiasm and attention to details last night. Let's hope it continues.

2. The work on special teams was stressed during Spring drills and it continues now. Last nights practices started with kickoff coverage drills and the coaching staff working on every detail of the coverage. I'd expect the Lamar defense to be put in better starting situations than in seasons past.

3. There were five players in QB jerseys: Mossakowski, Berry, Bergeron, Barrett and one more which didn't stick with the QB's the entire time. His size looked similar to that of Dillion Barrett.

4. The pads aren't on yet but I saw some improvement in the play of the WR's. Kevin Johnson is quick, practices hard and looks the part. He had a nice one handed grab during the 7-on-7 session. Kye Hildreth had some nice catches and ran good routes and Van Lawrence Franks is still explosive. They also added some size in Oyefeso. I'm ready to see the improvement in pads on Thursday.

5. Of all the freshmen I tried to identify (without my practice roster) the one that stood out last night was RB Darrell Harris. He gave his all every play, was really quick, showed good hands out of the backfield and when he wasn't involved with a play he was over a coaches shoulder looking at what I assume was a playbook. This team has a few freshmen that I think will come in and contribute this season.

That would be Patrick Carlton 6-3 275 7 SR-2L He played DL last season.

Could it be David Dunkin?...I've noticed he's not listed on the athletic website roster

I was asking about the third string center. He was wearing 71 on practice jersey. He looks fast and powerful. Might be a freshman. His snaps were off some but it was only second practice. Want to see him in pads.

Number 71 is not Patrick Carlton. His name is Richard Alfonso 6-1 260 Freshman. He has really good feet, strength and speed. I think the reason his snaps were so bad last night was because he was nervous plus its only the second practice he has time to improve. He is going to be a big threat. But Kyle Gillam is still pretty good this year

Thanks. I have never heard about Richard Alfonso. Where did he come from? Why isn't he on roster. I am hoping to go to a few practices. I am an O Line fan. He is a freshman? Wow is he third string? He might be right behind Kyle for sure. Mcknight rreally has a chance if he's got players like that.

Mike does it look like to you that Adren Dorsey has really lost 40lbs? I am not sure that I saw him at practice when I went Tuesday.

Adren looks the same size to me. I'm not saying it's not possible but again, he looks the same.

This from member "Mike t" from the o-line thread.

I actually got a chance to watch the OLine vs DLine in 1v1 pass rush yesterday and I was pretty surprised at who did well, and who didn't.

Brock moves well and is strong, very good pass blocker.

Colton stays infront well, but needs to work on footwork.

Gillam has good leverage, and center of balance.

Fairchild is slow and has bad footwork(Hopefully Sean will be back soon)

Babin has a good set but moves very slow. If he gets rushed by a fast DE he will get beat.

Kameron stays upright well, but has the same problem as Colton and Babin.

Davis moves well but needs to get a nasty side to him.

Wempa is slow and very out of shape. The whole practice he was short of breath and slothed around.

People that surprised me:

Kelso impressed me with his strength and footwork, if he keeps working he will help the OL very much this year.

Tredway showed his strength going against the starting DL. He has wonderful footwork and will be great for the team. May be seeing some of him this year.

Baxley surprised me with his footwork and leverage. If he puts on a few pounds I could see him getting some playing time this season.
