Nuggets from Final Open Practice (position switch & injury news)

Biggest news was seeing #64 at LG and not under center. That's right, Kyle Gilliam was playing LG with Ian Kelso moving to center. More details to come.

Team was in shells today in an attempt to get some guys healthy. Lots of Cards dinged up with the added practices this week

Herschel Sims was missing from practice today due to a family issue. Nothing major and will be back next week for school and ready for UL-L.

I've been missing practice this week due to work so it was good to see BJ Oyefeso out there working out today.

Quick work today due to the monsoon that blew in towards the end of practice.

Injury Notes:

As mentioned above many guys were held out today after the long week of practices. Here were the ones I noticed that weren't in pads:

- Adren Dorsey

- Blake Chavis

- Caleb Harmon

- Darrell Harris

- Kevin Johnson

- Alex Ball

may have been more but when they lined up for O vs D is when the rain blew in so I took cover. :) None of these are considered serious but just dings and preparing everyone to be ready next week for game week.

On a more serious note, Kye Hildreth will miss significant time and maybe the season after a bad concussion during practice last week.

Anthony Beard is out for the season with a knee injury.

Interview with Coach Woodard:

I had a great video interview with Coach after practice today but for whatever reason I didn't save it correctly, so it's gone. Here's a few notes on what we spoke about:

I asked how far the team has come along since the end of Spring Drills:

- Thought they'd come a long way and he's seen improvements in many area's over the last three weeks

Is there a different feeling about heading into this season with an established starter at QB compared to having three guys in the mix last season?

- he didn't say much about last season but did say Ryan Mossakowski will be the starter under center next week. Said it was a good competition and Caleb Berry did a lot to keep himself in the mix but Ryan would start.

In your opinion which group has shown the most improvement over the past three weeks?

- As said above he saw improvement in many areas but really saw the offensive line come together once they settled on the first team and began giving them reps together.

Speaking of the offensive line, talk about the move of Gilliam to LG and Kelso to center.

- Gave Kelso some reps at center and he looked really good so we decided to give it a shot. Gilliam played well at LG. This gives them the opportunity to get both guys on the field.

Hows' the teams health headed into Lafayette?

-overall great. As mentioned above many dinged up got to rest today but they'll be ready to go last week. Only two significant long term injuries are to Anthony Beard and Kye Hildreth.

I asked about the tomorrows banquet.

-excited about how it's coming together. More sales at this point than last year. Coach Phillips set to speak and hopes everyone will attend.

Anything else?

- he and the staff are "really excited" about the upcoming season. UL-L will be the first FBS program they've faced since the programs rebirth and they look forward to seeing how they match up. The team will be ready and hopes to see a lot of red with "LU" on it compared to the red with "UL-L" on it.

Thanks for the updates, Mike. Being here in Austin -aka Longhorn Central, this is thr best -and only source I can get good knowledge of all Lamar teams. You are heads and shoulders above the printed triangle media. Thanks for all you and BRI do.

I appreciate the compliment. We're just trying to give Lamar coverage similar to what you're probably used to seeing all over Austin with UT. Maybe we can get more students involved and the site will continue to grow. That's what I hope for anyways! Thanks again.

Is Kelso starting at center and Gillam at LG next week vs UL-L?

When will the two-deep be released for the game?

My guess is yes. They ran this way with the 1st team throughout todays practice.

I've asked and asked so hopefully we'll get our hands on the 2-deep ASAP.

Very interesting changes to the O line, if that does indeed make our first team o line much better then I'm happy to hear it. I think we will see a few miscues early in the season from that group but now that there is a settled first team we should see improvement from all the guys picked. Gilliam is our most veteran player so if anyone can handle a position change it would be him.

Good stuff, I'm very excited to see how we do against ULL. I think this game will tell us how we can expect to do against some of the stronger teams in conference this year. (mainly Sam)

More than anything I'm just hoping we stay healthy through that game and have a good showing from our special teams and defense.

I thought Kelso's injury was going to prevent him from playing on the OL? Does playing center make it easier on his knee? I'm guessing Gillam is moving to left guard because the coaches weren't satisfied with Wempa or Utterback starting.

Starting OL Saturday may be:

LT Brock (6-5, 280)

LG Gillam (6-1, 270)

C Kelso (6-0, 280)

RG Robertson (6-1, 270)

RT Collins (6-3, 310)

Going with speed and skill over size.

I

i know you don't change one week before season starts and make a change!!!! that is stupid

I know it's unsettling to change so soon before the beginning of the season but have faith! We don't know the why's. We are going to have to trust Coach Woodard and his staff THEY know what's going on.. (lol) We have experienced players on the line and they can handle it. UL-L had better watch out, cuz the Cards are comin'!
