Bruce Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 A great win after so many close calls this year. I agree that the offensive playcalling was greatly improved, although I did think the decision to sit on the ball at the end of the first half was a bad one. I also have to agree that if you're going to use a zone read look, the QB needs to keep the ball more often--otherwise, just run a quicker-developing running play... it just seemed to be that we weren't fooling them at all in the second half on those sorts of plays. But you can always find something to complain about in a game, and, by and large, our playcalling seemed solid. We kept coming at them in this game, and despite some miscues, blown defensive coverages, and an officiating crew that seemed to have it in for us all night (phantom holding penalty on the Johnson return, ticky-tack roughing the quarterback penalty that gave SFA at least four points, the lack of an unsportsmanlike call on the last-minute field goal attempt, etc.), they got the job done. Congrats to the team on a great win! I will say that the SFA band fiasco pissed me off. It was clear their effort was to distract the kicker, and the officials should have called unsportsmanlike on SFA on the first attempt (which would have been declined as the first field goal attempt was good, see NCAA rule 9.2.5(b) and 1.1.6) rather than blowing the play dead and giving SFA essentially a second "ice" of the kicker. Frankly, I think that the AD should bar SFA's band from the 2015 SFA-Lamar home game (I'm not sure by any means if he actually has the authority to do this--he may need to complain to the Southland Conference if wants to sanction the opposing band)--to me, the playing at the snap was intentional and shouldn't be tolerated. smith Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 I loved the effort that KL made on the on the long run by Johnson. He simply just ran him down and tackled him at the 1. He even made an effort for the strip. Even though SFA scored on the next play it gave Lamar a shot to stop them. To many times I see players give up on that play. I really liked that effort too.. I was thinking the same thing. The pick in the end zone and the final pick gives you a lot of confidence in his timing and him coming down with a jump ball. Also, one of the things I saw that I really liked was a simple play toward our bench. I had wondered if he would bring the wood on that side of the ball, but he came in on that tackle with his !?:! on fire. Don't think he got a direct hit but he was all in. Quote

While I fully agree an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty could've and should've been enforced and Alex Ball shouldn't have had to make that pressure kick twice, I do disagree with trying to get the visitors bands banned from showing up. Having both teams bands at the game adds to the game atmosphere. Heck I wish every opponent would bring their bands to Provost Umphrey. I also think the rule is silly that they cant play during game action. This isn't golf it's football so bring the noise. This reminds me of the mens basketball game last year in the Montagne Center when the officials warned the home crowd about using noisemakers in the stands twice because it was a distraction to the visiting team.......what a joke. Try going to Baton Rouge, College Station or Oregon and see how loud the stadium is. It's all part of the experience. Quote
LU1991 Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 It was a good win for LU. We have been in every conference game but have come up short on most of them so it's good to see us on the winning side. It was a great game to watch for the fans and good to see the stands on their feet at the end of the game. Looking forward to playing the cowgirls next week! Quote
dirtybird Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 A lot of people missed a great ending to the game. Lamar showed a lot of hart last night, they could of just quit when they got down. I know we are loosing quite a few seniors this year, but look at who all is coming back. I'm already excited about next year. Now need to just beat McNeese Quote

Try going to Baton Rouge, College Station or Oregon and see how loud the stadium is. It's all part of the experience. Don't get me wrong, Mike. I'd much rather see the bands there, including the opposing team's band. And SFA's band is quite good, as well, and performed well at the halftime show. At the same time, there is a difference between fans making a racket to distract the opponent and a band--who are sanctioned by the school and have instruments, timing the start of their playing in such a fashion that it is distracting to the offense. I'd much rather see this dealt with by proper officiating, and not by barring the bands, as well. But I'll admit that I would have been absolutely furious had Ball missed the second FG attempt when the band's shenanigans basically gave their team an extra "ice". In reality, I think that a 15-yard penalty is too strong for this type of thing--but a five-yard delay-of-game (plus the fact that it would essentially give the kicking team a "mulligan" as the play should still stand if preferable to the offense) should be enough to deter any intentional efforts by opposing bands to influence the offense. The NCAA should probably look into this, as I've actually seen one other time that this came into play (I believe they waved off a false start in the West Virginia-Texas game because the band started playing just before the snap). If you're going to have a rule, it should be well-known and enforced evenly, and the penalties should make sense. Quote
coachacola Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Lamar has a chance to finish the season tied for 4th place f they can beat McNeese. But whatever happens I'll be at the game Saturday cheering on the Cards! Quote
geezer Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 To tie for fourth a lot would have to happen including SAM beating UCA and NWST beating SFA. Not sure which I would rather have Lamar tied for fourth or UCA beating SAM. Quote
WOS95 Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Enjoyed the game last nite! still got some things to improve on...penalties, missed tackles, etc...but overall it was a great team effort and more importantly a great win! only big complaint was..what was the deal with the rain? lol...didnt see that coming... :P Quote
Cardinalrule Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Fantastic game, fantastic effort by players and coaching staff. Here are a few of my thoughts. 1. Great play calling. Mixed it up all game long. OC has taken alot of heat and he deserves credit tonight. 2. Caleb Berry was Brilliant tonight. Best game I have seen him play. He set another record for most receptions in a season. The guy was just awesome. 3. Regarding KJ. After what i saw tonight, we may be seeing him play safety in the pros one day. It will be fun to see him progress on D. Interesting how things work themselves out. 4. Alex Ball rocks. Thanks to the players and coaches for putting it together tonight. it was fun to watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Berry reception record? KJ playing safety in the NFL?? Haha Alex Ball definitely rocks! Talk about clutch!! Quote
Cardinalrule Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Fun game to watch. Highlights for me. 1. Cards driving the ball down the field for a td right after SFA scored the opening TD. 2. Onside kick recovery and the 2nd TD. 3. Score saving interceptions and breakups. There were several including KJ's great catch in the end zone. 4. Blocked kick for a TD. 5. Defensive stand on 4th down to get the ball back for the winning field goal. 6. We got burned on several long SFA TD passes, but the were some critical defensive stops that aided in the win like the one where SFA had to settle for a field goal after a 1st and goal. 7. Speaking of field goals, I never thought we could win the game settling for field goals, but 4 scores did it, especially the last one. 8. Half time - both bands put on a great performance. Really enjoyed the trumpet, trombone, and drum line spotlights. Looking forward to next Saturday. Sent from my Android device using Tapatalk 2 Lamar's band was very good but, damn, SFA's band and halftime performance was great. Their uniforms were first class and they sounded fantastic. I liked those purple SFA covers on the end of their tubas. We need some red KU ones for our band. Also, their band looked twice the size of ours? What's the deal with that? LU needs to recruit more band members? We also have some people that need to discover salads...if you know what I mean....lol Quote

And Berry really needs to keep it more on that read option. Quote
Lamarcard81 Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 That was about as much fun as you can have with your pants on! We have nothing to lose against McNiece. Hope our kids come out loose and fired up. I hope Jefferson County shows up and fills the stands and we dont hear "Jolie Blanc" until Sunday morning on KLVI! GO BIG RED Quote

It was great to have both of the bands present Saturday. SFA's band and their halftime performance was very good. In reference to the question about size of the band, I expect the LU band is still building its strength back. To me, one of the biggest tragedies of dropping football in 1989 was the detrimental impact on the marching band. If I recall, the band was in the 300-400 member range back then. Looked it up to refresh my memory and found this in an article about Dr. Simmons's induction into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame last year. With Simmons playing coach, quarterback and head cheerleader, Lamar revived the proud tradition of Cardinal football in 2010 after an absence of more than two decades. With football came the "Showcase of Southeast Texas" marching band, which invigorated another tradition: Lamar's 350-member "Grandest Band in the Land," which Simmons directed beginning in 1970. It would be nice for the band to get to that size again. In the meantime, I enjoy the contribution the band and supporting groups make to the overall football game experience. In addition to the actual game, I always looked forward to the halftime performances. I'm glad we have the opportunity to witness talented musicians during the halftime as well as during the game again. Quote

To my defense, i thought KJ just looked like he was playing on a whole different level as compared to everyone else on SFA. He had 4 tackles and 2 interceptions and he didn't even play that much. NFL? Who really knows, but i can say for certain that it is a possibility. He has the size and speed. Woodard said last night that he would not be surprised if he made all conference next year as a safety. Size + Speed + Opportunity = potential to make it to the NFL. Please forgive my naivet Quote
