LAZEEK
Could not agree more, about the poor recruiting class. This years class is much better, and next years (with only one player) needs to be a difference maker.
geezer
It would seem like at least one more of the non-performers should move on and make at least two new guys for next year.
eagle eye
PK seems to see his mistake in scheduling. Yes, his first recruits were not great but how can he recruit well right out of the box? He needs time to build a foundation for the program he's trying to build here. I really believe the article is correct by inferring that Knight was wrong to schedule such an aggressive non-conference schedule. That's why the win over ACU is important. Winning builds confidence. You can't keep losing and maintain confidence no matter what other lessons are learned. Let's hope the 2014-15 schedule allows Lamar to play some teams to help build that confidence. You want to play a tough opponent or two? Fine, but winning begets winning by instilling confidence. If you think Lamar is attractive as a basketball school because they go one time to the NCAA's big dance you're crazy because Lamar has been a basement dweller for 20+ years. PK is fighting to change the impression of Lamar by the outside world and potential recruits. Yes, we have a great building to play in but asking recruits to come to Lamar is like asking NFL draftees to get excited about going to Cleveland. Cleveland needs to win for players to view them in a positive light. The same with Lamar. We need to build a culture of winning here and that's the fight PK is fighting right now. Lamar Pride
It would seem like at least one more of the non-performers should move on and make at least two new guys for next year. Loyalty is a virtue. However, too much loyalty can be detrimental to a college basketball program trying to rebuild after making recruiting mistakes. In my opinion Coach Knight needs to make room for 3 new scholarships for next year. None of us need to call out specific players, but all of us that follow the team closely know there are guys who shouldn't be taking up scholarship space on this team. I don't claim to know all of the dynamics of our past recruiting classes, but I'm hopeful Scott Wagers has a solid recruiting network and can help us bring in a good recruiting class (hopefully 3 players). Kermit Holmes has been here since the Bill Tubbs era. He has been a part of good recruiting classes in the past and was in the reduced role of Director of Basketball Operations in the year of our disastrous recruiting class. Consequently, he is free from blame for poor talent evaluations that year. Holmes should have an extensive network by this point in his career. If he is ever going to get a shot at a head coaching position, he needs to help us right the ship and bring in a good class. Sherrod Wilkerson almost brought us the highly touted kid from Indiana. He doesn't have much experience as a college recruiter, but he is well known in Indiana. Between him and Knight, they need to work their tails off to get a difference maker from the Hoosier state. McDonaldGymRat
This writer for the BE looks too young to have any kind of understanding of the Lamar program and where it's problems stem from. Writing an article saying PK's first recruiting class wasn't very good seems to be picking some pretty low hanging fruit.
Knightman
I would agree with the article, that when Pat and the staff got here and inherited that great senior class, with six to eight seniors, you had better have a blockbuster recruiting class to replace the great players that you have lost, and if your recruiting class even comes up the least bit light, it is going to hurt the program, this last class has been better, but we need a sure enough lights out recruiting class this year, and you are usually have a couple that decide for one reason or another to leave, and whatever happens and however it goes, we need to make those scholarship count!!!!!!!!!!! Go Cards!!!!!!! Knightman
Birdseye
How do you recruit well right out of the box? Really? How do we let 16 year old kids drive, and they manage not to total the car at the end of the driveway? Because we make sure they have experience before we let them go out on their own. Just like Lamar hired Pat because he had experience. He was a head coach before. He should know that you have to have talent to win. With his first recruiting class he ran the car into the closed garage door! Billy Tubbs was out of coaching came in and won more than THREE GAMES! He also recruited one of the best forwards at Lamar, Alan Daniels. Knight came straight from a Big 12 coaching job to Lamar. He SHOULD have known something about what was going on in regards to recruiting in the state. Then the talk about taking time to build something. If Lamar had just moved from the Southland into the Big 12, I could understand a 3 win season. We are still in the Southland. Where are the power houses that Lamar is recruiting against. I'm not saying that Lamar is the best but in the Southland we are way above the worst. You want to tell me Nichols St. Is an easier sale than Lamar? Look around the Southland Lamar is not out classed by any of them. Pat said that Lamar has only been to the NCAA's twice in the past 20 years. Tell me who in the Southland is going every year. My point is that Pat is not in a gun fight with a slingshot. But that is the kind of results he has put out. The WORST record ever, EVER. coachacola
Why can't lamar hire someone like Brad Underwood at SFA? https://sfajacks.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/042313aac.html
puddin tane
we havent been worth a piss since Foster...a few decent seasons...mainly suckage and a long line of clowns...and Knight is Bozo
LAZEEK
Virtually impossible for LU to "cut" players with the NCAA rules regarding APR. Teams must stay above a certain number, and if players don't graduate or transfer it hurts a university's APR.
LAZEEK
Players that transfer have to have a 2.6 GPA and transfer to a 4 year school for it not to affect your APR.
Cardinalrule
Could not agree more, about the poor recruiting class. This years class is much better, and next years (with only one player) needs to be a difference maker. How is this recruiting class better than last years? Seems to me it might be even worse
