coachacola Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 So he can't qualify academically but as long as he can play we'll take him? Nice. Sounds like nothing but trouble and sends a poor message. We always take a few JUCO players a year. Don't most players go the JUCO route out of high school because of grades? I don't see why he's any different. Quote
Big T Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 So he can't qualify academically but as long as he can play we'll take him? Nice. Sounds like nothing but trouble and sends a poor message. K-State's academic qualifications are quite a bit higher than Lamar's. Just because he did not qualify for K-State does not mean he is not a decent student in the classroom. Most students at Lamar are there because they weren't able to get into a larger school like A&M, UT, or K-State. Quote
puddin tane Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Says he did not meet NCAA requirements Quote
geezer Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Lamar used to have lower academic standards than some other schools but I don't think that is really the case anymore. Quote
KABrother88 Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 He did not qualify out of HS...that is why he went to Navarro...very common for guys who don't qualify to go JUCO then get into D-I Quote

I can see our slogan now "too dumb for K state, come here we take anyone" Quote

I can see our slogan now "too dumb for K state, come here we take anyone" No where in the article does it say he doesn't qualify for K-State now after 2 years at Navarro. Not sure why you are so down on this one guy. He went to JUCO to get his grades up like most of these guys. Quote
baller Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 JUCO qualifiers now have to have at least a 2.5 GPA which now doesn't include a bunch of PE classes.Over the last decade the NCAA has raised the number of core classes high school athletes must take and pass from 12 to 16.This has hurt us with some foreign recruits who take algebra in the 8th grade and the myopic NCAA does not count it because it wasn't taken in grades 9-12 .I think you now have to have 4 years of qualifying math credits .The bottom line is many of our great players of past years would have had to go to JUCO under today's standards. With schools like ULL and Louisiana Tech now saying they are going to pay athletes thousands of dollars like the big boys do you really not want to recruit talented JUCO athletes who didn't qualify out of high school but matured in JUCO.That would really handicap our coaches and hurt hiring coaches compared to most schools.I remember even Bobby Knight finally recruited a JUCO athlete at Indiana and seeing that athlete Keith Smart hit the baseline jumper to win him an NCAA championship in New Orleans. baller Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 The son of a friend is a top 100 player in his sport. He has a very high ACT and GPA and is being recruited by Stanford, and various Ivy league schools including Harvard and Princeton. They have told his parents part of his appeal is they don't have to use one of their academic exceptions on him and they usually have to use them to get a top player at his position.Even those schools make academic exceptions!!!!!!!!! KABrother88 Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Couple of tidbits from Twitter [tweet]588186616683962371[/tweet] Kirk Mason a 6'2" Guard from Southlake Carroll HS. His header photo is on of inside the Montagne so there may be something more to him. [tweet]587670487880179712[/tweet] Najeal Young a 6'5" Forward from Lincoln College who has taken an interesting path...went to Kingwood JC after HS for 1 season. Then he signed with Iona but never played for them, instead playing for Lincoln College this past season. He averaged 14.1 points and 8.5 boards there. Quote

SportsGuy Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I've tried to dig up more info on Kirk Mason but there isn't much on the internet. Judging by this article, he put up 12 PPG on a team that was pretty average. Hope he turns out to be a player! Quote
Big T Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Just ran into Coach Tic and his staff at Lloyds in Beaumont. Looked like they had two recruits with them. Quote

KABrother88 Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 [tweet]597154651893469184[/tweet] Right now, with the 2 new additions, we are at the 13 scholarship limit for the 15-16 season according to the Verbal Commits breakdown. So another addition would either mean another player is transferring out on top of the 3 already reported or someone will be in walk-on. Quote

LUFAN Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 (edited) It shows boaz Williams as a class of 2016 on one website and 2015 on another. Not sure which is correct. Edited May 10, 2015 by LUFAN Quote
KABrother88 Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 It shows boaz Williams as a class of 2016 on one website and 2015 on another. Not sure which is correct. I see on the Future 150 site he's listed as 2016 but everything else I've seen leads you to believe 2015. Assuming that 1 website is wrong. Didn't catch that before though. Quote
