The move for no more FCS games is spreading to G5 programs

Recommended Posts

I think this move from the FBS schools will disappear in a few years as long as playing FCS schools don't hinder their bowl eligibility. When you have to have six wins to be eligible and all you are playing are FBS schools it is going to get hard to have enough teams bowl eligible without someone playing FCS schools to fill all of the bowl games. This whole thing starts with the Big Ten potentially not getting a playoff spot last year because of strength of schedule.

I believe FBS schools can only count an FCS win every 2 years for bowl eligibilty. The big disadvantage of this move is the loss of the big checks for the FCS school. At some schools, these games finance a large percentage of their budget.

Very good point on the big checks and financing the budget.

As far as FCS counters, FBS teams can count an FCS win for bowl eligibility each year. Section 18.7.2 Postseason Bowl Games [FBS/FCS] of the 2015-16 NCAA Division I Manual effective August 1, 2015 provides the criteria. Section addresses FCS wins specifically.

The FCS opponent needs to meet the "deserving opponent" criteria which is defined as having "...averaged 90 percent of the permissible maximum number of grants-in-aid per year in football during a rolling two-year period. For purposes of this provision, a full grant-in-aid is the value of full tuition and fees, room and board, and required course-related books..."

Lamar missed out on a 2011 game against TCU because the team didn't meet the criteria. The Cardinals were still ramping up to the needed number of grants-in-aid in 2010. Below are links to articles discussing the proposed game. The second link provides the details of why the game was not scheduled.
