So the only real surprise was Detrick Bell I guess. From his Hudl highlights, it looks like he played last year with a cast on his arm from the elbow down. Maybe he dropped to us because of that. He looks pretty athletic on tape. It looks like a pretty good class besides being a little light on DL.

We did lose a local couple of kids to SFA, SHSU, McNeese. McNeese also landed Briscoe, RB out of Bellville, that Lamar had made an offer along with Merchant, a stud DB, went to SHSU.:(

Looks like if you tally up all the kids on this website that Lamar was at least interested in from this time last year (2 different coaching staffs), there were a total of 103 names - of that we signed 20. Interestingly then, very few of the 103 signed with SLC as I can tell. Keeler stated at SHSU that they targeted basically specific positions - looks like SFA did too.

Most of the guys we signed weren't even on the radar when the new staff came in. That is to be expected with a coaching change. You are trying to create a relationship with a kid in 3 weeks that will trump the potentially 8-12 month relationship that kid has with other coaching staffs. Without saying too much, I've been told we could have potentially dodged a bullet with Merchant. While he is a great player, I've been told there is some baggage there. That would explain why a kid with some of the offers he had committed to an FCS school. I can also say now, we were very, very close to landing 3-Star DL Darren Thomas. I was told that UIW came in with an offer at the 11th hour and it is like 10 minutes from his home. That was enough for him. We still need bodies on the DL and I'm curious what we will do for spring with only like 5 DL on campus.

Per Sugar Land Austin HS K/P Benjamin Baxter's twitter account, he will join Lamar as a preferred walk-on. Added depth in the kicking game as currently we only had signee Elvin Martinez set to be here for the season. Still might be a work in progress with 2 true-freshman handling the duties.

I was hoping someone would walk on. Freshman kickers and punters scare the crap out of me tho. Morse punted during the spring and there were ZERO kickoffs.

Looks like the staff is after some immediate depth at the RB position as well. JUCO RB Thomas McDonald (5'11" 195 lbs) is set to take on official visit to Lamar. He was a 3-Star coming out of Grossmont College in California in 2016 and had committed to Utah. For whatever reason he did not sign and it appears he was out of football last year, However, he hadn't used his RS there so he would have 2 years of eligibility left. In 19 games at Grossmont he ran for 1,331 yards on 235 carries (5.66 y/c) with 13 TDs

FBS transfer season will start soon. There are a few early names to keep an eye on.

DL Marcel Southall - the UT transfer is a long shot in my opinion due to him still having a RS and JUCO eligibility as well. I would expect the Lamar staff would at least reach out to gauge interest though.

DL Jordan Elliott - another UT DL transfer (both were announced Thursday) this one is an even longer shot. And potentially for good measure. In just 1 year, the kid was committed to Baylor, Houston & Michigan all before eventually signing with Texas. Then he only lasted 1 season there before deciding to transfer. Granted it was following a coaching change but that has to make a coach a little hesitant what kind of commitment he's actually getting.

TE Payton Aucoin - yet another UT transfer and there has been some twitter follow activity between some of the Lamar coaches and Aucoin. He's a New Orleans native so SELA and Nicholls might be bigger players in this.

OL Tank Davis - while there has not been an official release that Davis is leaving Texas A&M, there has been some smoke about him leaving for a few months. The RS Jr has had trouble cracking the depth chart even with a lack of depth at their tackle positions
